Opening up this weekend!
Land of the Lost – I’m assuming will make the most money of the weekend, lets say $35 mil. For one it’s a Will Ferrell comedy, which he hasn’t produced since Step Brothers, which was rated R. Parents can take their kids to this PG-13 past ’70s sitcom so they can relive their childhoods. Or if some people these days, like myself, who grew up watch the 1991 version might also go see this to try and remember something from their childhood also. This looks like another cheesy one-liner Ferrell movie that would be hit or miss. I might see it, but I would suggest it as a renter, or just wait in two years to see it on USA I’m guessing.
Away We Go – Looks like a cute romantic indie comedy. This film stars John Krasinski (Leatherheads & License to Wed), Maya Rudolph (SNL), Allison Janney (Juno’s mom), which is about A couple (Rudolph and Krasinski) who is expecting their first child travel around the U.S. in order to find a perfect place to start their family (imdb). This is only a limited screening movie, but could do well with the critics I believe. It looks heartfelt and is a different kind of movie for this blockbuster packed Summer.
The Hangover – This movie looks funny, but also looks like it goes a little too far with its imagination. If anything like these events from the movie were ever true to anyone I’d like to meet them. This movie reminds me of the Simpson’s episode where Homer takes Flanders to Vegas to live his life. Although it is Simpsonesque, I think this movie should do well for itself up against Land of the Lost. I’m sure people are a little sick of Ferrell comedies (Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro) and will definitely want to experience this adventure. I’ll give this movie $20 mil for the weekend
My Life In Ruins – I have no idea what this movie is, but I doubt it will make any money. I’ll go with $3 million. This movie stars Nia Vardalos (Big Fat Greek Wedding), Richard Dreyfuss (W. as Dick Cheney), Rachel Dratch (SNL). This movie is about a travel guide (Vardalos) rediscovers her romantic side, with a very unlikely match, as she whisks a group of tourists around Greece. Sounds to me like they are trying to revive what’s life in those who liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding, boooo.
NO NO NO NO NO Saw 8 and 9?
Ok, although I love the Saw franchise as much as the next horror film lover, this has just got to stop. Jigsaw/John Kramer is a creative and calculating villain in these movies and has been one of the greatest faces of horror and he has only been around for almost five years. Back when the fourth film was done, I was led to believe that there would only be six. I laughed at this when I first heard about it, but I waited to see what would happen. The story itself is ingenious, new and inventive, but getting very stale; especially with the 5th film. And now reports of Saw 8 & 9 with not even the 7th one produced yet, what?
I don’t think Hollywood gets it when they are thinking about recreating Short Circuit. This 80’s classic was a favorite of mine back and the day and its only a little over 20 years old. Leave it alone! What’s wrong with people these days. Although I love what they do at Robot Chicken and writer Dan Milano has been chosen to write this remake. Poor Johnny 5.
And of course, Arnold was offered a role in the new Predators reboot. Just another remake in this mess we call film making.Sometimes I wish i never picked up this strange hobby of getting into movie knowledge and such.……
Kung Fu legend and Bill in Kill Bill was recently found dead in his hotel room in Bangkok. Those at the BBC have the article and Carradine was found and assumed that he hung himself. He was recently overseas shooting one of his new movie, Stretch.
Due to their outrageous campaign to boost sales with the Whopper, this campaign has won the Effie for the restaurant category. What is an Effie – The Effie Awards were founded in 1968 by the American Marketing Association, New York Chapter, as an awards program to recognize the most effective advertising efforts in the United States each year (effie.org). This is a great accomplishment for their effective and very creative marketing campaign. Congrats!
Another notable Effie winner this year are, Dos Equis Most Interesting Man for alcoholic beverages.
Here are a couple ads found throughout the web this week, Enjoy.
Durex – Great, yet annoying. Although they don’t talk about safe sex, this is just a fun and different perspective on condom advertising.
This new videogame, Star Wars: The Old Republic, that was displayed for the first time during E3 ’09 has to be one of the coolest looking Star War games ever; well the trailer at least looks cool, even tho it is some MMO game. If only George Lucas sat down, thought about how he should create the prequels and maybe it might have turned out like this:
