Review: (500) Days of Summer

film review small

“This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know up front, this is not a love story.”

(500) Days of Summer is not your typical linear storyline; it is beautifully told within a series of events between the 500-day relationship of Tom Hanson (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a greeting card copywriter living in Los Angeles and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), the newly appointed secretary of Tom’s boss. Chronological order is disregarded from the very beginning, while throughout the movie we travel back and forth in time putting all the pieces together. This misguidance of time gives a fresh face in the calamity of stereotypical romantic comedies seen these past few years. Sometimes we don’t always explore time in a particular order, but as a series of events that have happened the way you want to see them and this film takes you through that journey.

Tom meets Summer when she is introduced as the boss’ assistant and instantly falls in love. The further we venture into their lives the more complicated the relationship becomes. At the beginning of the film, Summer tells Tom that they should stop seeing each other, which comes as more of a shock than he wants to believe. From here, Tom starts his mission to try and win her back, but in the process he learns more about himself and his relationship than he first thought was possible.

Summer is the embodiment of tireless hours that men have struggled over to figure out the ultimate mystery of the world, women. First time film director, Marc Webb, fully understands the emotions of Tom and Summer and takes this small indie story to a more personal level. Most romantic comedies only dream to achieve a sense of real characters that you can relate to, which (500) Days of Summer have captured elegantly. Sometime throughout our lives we have either been a “Summer” or a “Tom” and Webb’s direction places this familiarity on the viewer, which brings you into the situations more personally.

As a music video director, Webb is very familiar with encompassing the right tone of visual elements while complimenting music. Music plays a big role in the film’s emotional settings and it even has a brilliant dance number. Webb uses many interesting filming techniques that he incorporates well as part of the story. The color blue also plays an important role in this film as Webb creates a very playful use of the color planting it into your mind whenever Summer is or is not present. Visually this film is also beautifully shot, with some of the frames feeling almost photographic and monochromatic.

Filled with cute witty dialogue, that could only be found in a post Diablo Cody’s “Juno” era, (500) Days of Summer flirts with your emotions while you root for our hero Tom. Comedic, moving, and musically inclined, (500) Days of Summer hits all the right notes for a fun and clever must see story. Something entirely different comes out of this film and is captured wonderfully by Marc Webb. The movie skews your perception of time and events, but that never takes away from the excellent on screen chemistry of Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel.

If you are looking for a romantic, moral driven, happy ending, you should walk in the other direction. (500) Days of Summer is not your typical Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy, this film requires you to get involved with these characters and join in on this tale of boy meets girl.

I give it: 5/5

Box Office Battlefield: Funny People, The Collector, and The Cove

battle field

Well howdy there, here are the movies that are coming out this weekend that you should or probably shouldn’t see for the weekend of July 31, 2009…………

Funny People (Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann) This is a must see. With so much gold around Judd Apatow’s belt, I don’t see how you could miss this movie. It looks heartwarming and hilarious, which is killer combination for all to see. This is more of an adult coming of age movie unlike the past films Apatow has created (40-Year Old Virgin & Knocked Up). It is about an actor, George Simmons (Sandler), who befriends an up and coming comedian, Ira (Rogen), as he goes through the notion that he is dying. But the doctors tell him that he gets a second chance and things start to look better for George. This film has a lot of influence from Apatow’s life and with a star studded cast and a great story, you need to go out and see this movie.

Aliens in the Attic (Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Carter Jenkins) This is a movie you could take your kids too, but it would be kind of painful to watch. Alien’s are in the attic and want to take over the house, but will Ashley Tisdale sing them to death? Will the grandmother bust out more Street Fighter moves? It’s original I’ll say, but it’s nothing I would run to the theater too. Skip it.

Adam (Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher) This little Fox Searchlight indy dramedy/romance film looks interesting. It’s about a guy named Adam with Asperger’s Syndrome who is drawn to the girl who lives downstairs from his apartment. It looks clever, funny and touching, but nothing special. If you like the kind of films that Fox Searchlight has produced like Juno, (500) Days of Summer, The Wrestler, this is a nice quaint movie you might want to check out on a lazy Sunday. I’d say rent it.

The Cove (Richard O’Barry) This is a clever documentary of activists exploring the rumored incidents of dolphin abuse near Taijii, Japan. This exposé of infiltrating to find the truth is an award winning film from many film festivals such as Sundance. This is a must see, as this is a compelling story, and if you can stomach sitting through a  documentary. You should see it or rent it when it comes out.

The Collector (Josh Stewart, Andrea Roth, Juan Fernández) You say this just looks like another slasher film, well it is, but it is cleverly different. From the creators of Saw IV, V, and VI, bring you a shocking new figure to horror. A man breaks into a house, but someone worse is already inside. Now the man who broke in must save the ones he was trying to steal from. From a fan of horror, I think this looks good compared to what has come out recently. The tag line says “He Always Takes One,” but what does he collect? I guess you’ll have to see it to find out.

Ridley Scott Returns to Acid Blooded Aliens

alien_from_the_movie

According to Variety, Ridley Scott (directed the first Alien film) has been attached to direct the Alien prequel that is coming out eventually. This movie is run by 20th Century Fox and has hired the writer, Jon Spaihts (Passengers), to write the story who pitched the prequel to the studio. This prequel will be set before all four Alien films. This sequel should get some good hype as long as it sticks to its roots. We all know reboots, prequels and remakes can be done horribly, but I have a good feeling about this one.

Where the Wild Things Are Must Watch Featurette!

wildthingsare-fl-01

This featurette takes a look into the making of Where the Wild Things Are. It tells how Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) and Maurice Sendak (the original author) came to an agreement when making this film. They practically fell in love with each other and their ideals. This is a very wonderful look into how the story will be told and you must watch it. The Film comes out October 16th of this year.

Quick Notes 5

blog+scribbles

Here we go with some quick notes again. Quick Notes are articles and blips that I do not feel on typing out full news that could just be viewed in shorts because there is just not enough time in the day to possibly touch on everything in full. They are all just a bunch of random hooblah of sorts that fell into this little section of fun and goodness after the jump: Stories of Pirates 4, Transformers 3, TMNT, and more!

Box Office Battlefield: G-Force, The Orphan, and The Ugly Truth

Hellllllllllllloooooooooooooooo, Here are the movies that have come out this weekend that you should probably see……………………

G-Force – (Will Arnett, Penélope Cruz, Zach Galifianakis) You probably shouldn’t see this, but it comes out this weekend. Althought Galifianakis is good, a movie about secret agent guinea pigs is so dumb. Skip it.

The Orphan(Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman) DUMB, and I like horror films. This just has stupid written all over it. The plot is just such a horrible concept. Horror scripts must be running dry other than the remakes and Saw sequels. Skip it

The Ugly Truth – (Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler) I like Butler and dislike Heigl’s high strung attitude, but this movie looks pretty good. I think the concept and story is funny. Although it does look like a predicitable rom/com, I’d say it has something original about it that will make it fun to watch. See it

The Answer Man(Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham, Lou Taylor Pucci) Beats me what this is, I just heard about it when putting it down right now. A reclusive author of a well-known spiritual guidance book falls for a sensible chiropractor and learns some important life lessons as he begins to face the public and his past. This little hidden romantic/slight comedy looks ok, heartfelt and warm, but nothing that makes me jump out of my seat. Rent it.

According to all who went to Comic Con to see the Book of Eli panel, someone questioend Mr. Oldman about the anticipated Dark Knight sequel. Apparently it will begin production next year, but when?

First Official Look at The Book Of Eli Teaser Trailer

bookofeliart

The teaser trailer for The Book Of Eli has been released by Apple today. Seems to be the day of trailer release because its like the 3242 trailer to debut today. It stars Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis. From what I know it’s about some post apocalyptic story where Denzel has a book that can save humanity and ventures across America. Looks like it could be good, but in a way could be bad? But I can believe in Denzel and Oldman, Kunis is way left field, but good for her. This film comes out January 15, 2010, check out the teaser trailer here:
