Now Available to Own: Unfriended, Hot Pursuit, Hell on Wheels, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of August 11, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Unfriended, Hot Pursuit, Hell on Wheels, Person of Interest, and more.

Movies on Blu-ray

Unfriended (Levan Gabriadze) Rated R [82 min] – A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.Director: Stars: Heather Sossaman, Matthew Bohrer, Courtney Halverson, Shelley Hennig (Watch the trailer)

How well could a studio pull off a full-length feature film told exclusively via Skype? A few shorts have been told through the medium, but nothing as daring as Unfriended has yet to be attempted. And it works. Unfriended cuts itself at the right moment and it never feels as if they’re cheating their way to tell the story. The depth of the mythology is kind of lacking, but the concept is fun and the actors are pretty believable for a low-budget horror. There are enough solid setups and surprises that will keep you invested until the very end.

Hot Pursuit (Anne Fletcher) Rated PG-13 [87 min] – An uptight and by-the-book cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen. Starring Reese Witherspoon, Sofía Vergara, Matthew Del Negro, Michael Mosley, and John Carroll Lynch (Watch the trailer)

Reese Witherspoon hasn’t been jumping on many opportunities to come back to the silver screen. Last year’s Wild proved she still had the acting chops that won her the Oscar in Walk the Line. And as much as I enjoy Legally Blonde, Hot Pursuit is not a return to form for the actress in the realm of comedy. She has a knack for the genre, but Hot Pursuit is not written well for her. The movie is too thin and too goofy to find any ounce of entertainment; unless you like the sound of Sofia Vergara screaming incomprehensibly.

The Womance – Reese and Sofía’s on-set crazy-mashup-antics. From dance moves to car crashes, see these women light up the screen and leave us in stitches with their side-splitting comedic styling.
Say What? – Watch the hilarity that ensued when Reese and Sofía each tried to speak the other’s language. See Reese get her tongue tied trying to speak Spanish and watch Sofía’s tongue actually go numb from trying to speak English.
Action Like A Lady – In this action montage we will see all the crazy fun that went into creating the insane action scenes in the film. From jumping out a ten-foot high window, to a crazy girl fight to commandeering a tour bus during a high-speed shoot out… bring on the laughs.

I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story (Dave LaMattina and Chad N. Walker) Unrated [90 min] – Caroll Spinney has been Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since 1969; at 78-years-old, he has no intention of stopping. Staring Caroll Spinney, Jim Henson, and Frank Oz

For anyone growing up over the past half century, Big Bird was most likely a big part of your childhood. I Am Big Bird captures the magic and the wonder of what makes the character and the man behind him so special. There’s so many touching behind the scenes moments that even the Grinch would be moved. This is a great nostalgic documentary, but there’s not much of a definitive angle it’s trying to capture. Just the tale of a man and his many talents.

Person of Interest: The Complete Fourth Season (Jonathan Nolan) Rated TV-14 [43 min] – A former CIA operative is recruited by an enigmatic billionaire to prevent violent crimes. Starring Jim Caviezel, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Chapman, and Michael Emerson

The folks behind Person of Interest continue to keep the series in good spirits with now four seasons under their belt. There are still surprises and wonderful character moments that continue to bring more depth and more intrigue into one of the better written crime dramas on network TV. The fourth season ends on quite the high note, leaving much to be desired for an upcoming with Sarah Shahi returning as a series regular.

2 Broke Girls: The Complete Fourth Season (Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King) Rated TV-14 [22 min] – Two young women waitressing at a greasy spoon diner strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business – if only they can raise the cash. Starring Kat Dennings, Beth Behrs, and Garrett Morris

I’m not sure who continues to green light season after season of 2 Broke Girls, but it has to stop. I’m not one to quit in the middle of a season, but I stopped only a handful of episodes into the first season and never looked back. Given the chance to check out season four, I was curious to see how much this show has changed. As much as I like Kat Dennings quirky indie charming, the writing and the comedy is too corny. And the plot moves at a snails pace with nothing really moving our characters in a particular direction. The show is very stagnant and droll.

Hell on Wheels: The Complete Fourth Season (Joe and Tony Gayton) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – Cullen Bohannon, a former soldier and slaveholder, follows the track of a band of Union soldiers, the killers of his wife. This brings him to the middle of one of the biggest projects in US history, the building of the transcontinental railroad. After the war years in the 1860s, this undertaking connected the prospering east with the still wild west. Starring Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Phil Burke, Robin McLeavy, Dohn Norwood, Christopher Heyerdahl, Common, and Kasha Kropinski

I’ve never bothered with Hell on Wheels before. It’s never struck me as immediate viewing, and I’ve never heard any noise surrounding the show. So I checked out season four since I had the chance to. It’s a very cinematically beautiful show, but basic on all levels. Hell on Wheels seems perfectly content with playing it safe without causing too much of a stir. It’s an interesting period of events to follow, but there just isn’t enough depth to keep this train running.

The Knick: The Complete First Season One (Jack Amiel, Michael Begler) Unrated [58 min] – A look at the professional and personal lives of the staff at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century. Starring Katrina E. Perkins, Clive Owen, and André Holland

I have not seen this series, but have heard positive things toward it. Nip/Tuck served as a fantastic surgery show based in the present day, and I’d be interested in checking out The Knick for that reason back in the time it’s set.

Insurgent only made the series more convoluted. With nearly its entire cast completely unbearable, making idiotic character decisions at every turn, Insurgent makes Beautiful Creatures look like an Oscar contender.

Starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, and Tom Sturridge

I have not seen this movie yet, but I’ve heard it’s an early awards season candidate. I like Carey Mulligan, so I’m down to check it out sometime.

A Little Chaos (Alan Rickman) Rated R [117 min] – Two talented landscape artists become romantically entangled while building a garden in King Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles. Starring Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, and Matthias Schoenaerts

Did not see this movie, but it looked pretty boring. Sorry Professor Snape.

True Story (Rupert Goold) Rated R [99 min] – When disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel meets accused killer Christian Longo – who has taken on Finkel’s identity – his investigation morphs into a game of cat-and-mouse. Starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Felicity Jones, and Ethan Suplee

What starts off as one of the more disturbing visual cold openings for a film I have seen in a while, True Story is a fascinating watch. Sadly, with how intriguing the relationship forged between Franco’s Longo and Hill’s Finkel is, the movie fizzles out after the halfway point. I like Felicity Jones, but her part felt completely wasted. Goold tries really hard to create parallels between the two leads, but there is not enough to back up his intentions. And the ending is very anti-climactic.

Innerspace (Joe Dante) Rated PG [120 min] – A hapless store clerk must foil criminals to save the life of the man who, miniaturized in a secret experiment, was accidentally injected into him. Starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan

I had never seen or even heard of Innerspace until I learned of its Blu-ray release. And when I sat down to watch this film I had no real idea what to expect. Innerspace is definitely a very original story that’s kinda fun, but way too long. There’s a lot of pop culture references taken from the movie that we see today; there’s even a recent episode of Archer very similar to the premise of this film. It’s a silly watch for sci-fi comedy fans, but I don’t think it would hold up to modern audiences today; there’s just not a lot there to keep someone’s attention.

Blast from the Past (Hugh Wilson) Rated PG-13 [112 min] – A romantic comedy about a naive man who comes out into the world after being in a nuclear fallout shelter for 35 years. Starring Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, and Christopher Walken

The title speaks for itself with this latest Blu-ray transfer. I wasn’t a big fan of Blast from the Past when it first released, but thought I would give it another go. It’s barely passable. The characters are too uninteresting to care about their dilemmas. However, it’s a good concept that worked very well in Netflix’s The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Barely Lethal (Kyle Newman) Rated PG-13 [96 min] – A teenage special ops agent coveting a “normal” adolescence fakes her own death and enrolls in a suburban high school. She quickly learns that surviving the treacherous waters of high school is more challenging than international espionage. Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Sophie Turner, and Jessica Alba

What would happen if Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass grew up to be a rebellious teenager? Oh wait, they already touched on it in Kick-Ass 2. And as terrible as that movie was, Barely Lethal does slightly better. There’s more focus on Hailee Steinfeld’s young assassin character as she transitions into high school. There’s also an oddball sensibility that provides a few chuckles. Barely Lethal wants to be edgy, but can’t quite reach the high bar it sets for itself. Perhaps if they went for an R rating they would have had a little more freedom to obtain that edge.

Child 44 (Daniel Espinosa) Rated R [137 min] – A disgraced member of the military police investigates a series of nasty child murders during the Stalin-era Soviet Union. Starring Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace, and Joel Kinnaman

Period pieces are not my bag, and Child 44 did not change my opinion of the genre. All the big stars involved are a wasted talent. The movie drags on far too long with a throughline mystery itching to be solved in a more dynamic and colorful way. The climax is unearned and the thrilling case behind the murders is not captivating at all.

The Last Survivors (Thomas S. Hammock) Unrated [95 min] – A teenage girl fights to protect the last working well in a drought-stricken valley from a greedy water baron. Starring Haley Lu Richardson, Booboo Stewart, Max Charles, and Nicole Arianna Fox

Not all post-apocalyptic movies have to revolve around zombies or segregated districts. The Last Survivors is a really intimate and well-intentioned dystopia flick that takes chances. Unfortunately there isn’t much depth or story to create an interesting world in its short run time, which makes the film feel overly long. Haley Lu Richardson is a strong lead for this B-movie flick at least, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of everything else that could help support her.

A la mala (Pedro Pablo Ibarra) Rated PG-13 [99 min] – When aspiring actress Maria Laura’s best friend begs her to flirt with her boyfriend to test his fidelity, Maria finds a lucrative new career. After being hired by women across the city, Maria is given a gig that should be business as usual until she ends up falling head over heels for her latest mark. Starring Aislinn Derbez, Mauricio Ochmann, and Papile Aurora

This movie is also sitting on my shelf. I’ve liked Pantelion Films’ previous releases (Spare Parts; Instructions Not Included), and A la mala looks like it was made in the same vein; kind of goofy, but with a good heart.

Adult Beginners (Ross Katz) Rated R [90 min] – A young, narcissistic entrepreneur crashes and burns on the eve of his company’s big launch. With his entire life in total disarray, he leaves Manhattan to move in with his estranged pregnant sister, brother-in-law and 3-year-old nephew in the suburbs – only to become their nanny. Starring Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Joel McHale, and Jane Krakowski

I have not seen this movie nor have I had the opportunity presented to me.

The Making of Adult Beginners featurette

Television Series

The Affair (Hagai Levi and Sarah Treem) [DVD Only] Rated TV-MA [60 min] – The psychological effects of an affair between a married waitress at a Hamptons diner and a teacher who spends his summer at his in-laws’ estate on the island. Starring Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Maura Tierney, and Joshua Jackson

I wasn’t going to check this series out until I remembered that The Affair earned an OK amount of awards season buzz last year. Although I’ve only gotten through the first couple episodes, The Affair has tickled my interest and I’m curious to see how the plot pans out through the rest of the season. I really like the his/her storytelling device they use to tell the perspectives of Dominic West and Ruth Wilson’s characters. It’s a unique way to unveil character details as well as build a mystery.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Complete First Season (Sam Rolfe) [DVD Only] Unrated [50 min] – The two top agents of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement fight the enemies of peace, particularly the forces of THRUSH.Stars: Robert Vaughn, David McCallum, Leo G. Carroll

I wanted to check out The Man from U.N.C.L.E. original series before the movie adaptation hit theaters this month. I watched the first few episodes and enjoyed it for the most part. The time when this series was made had its limitations, but overall the show doesn’t take itself as seriously as Bond. The episodes could be a little tighter, but I like Napoleon Solo as a semi-charming agent for U.N.C.L.E.. He’s not someone I would want to continually watch because he doesn’t seem to be the most skilled agent, but he comes from a good place. The Russian comes off as a robotic side-kick who slowly learns humanity; a little cliché for these times, but fresh for its original run.

Orphan Black: The Complete Third Season (John Fawcett and Graeme Manson) Sarah is in a desperate race to find her missing daughter, but her scorched earth tactics spark a war with Rachel, dividing and imperiling all the clones. This is still on my shame list that is begging me to take it off. I’ll watch this series some day…

Now Available to Own: Home, The Water Diviner, and White God

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of July 28, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are Home, The Water Diviner, and White God.

Movies on Blu-ray

White God (Kornél Mundruczó) Rated R [121 min] – Thirteen-year-old Lili fights to protect her dog Hagen. She is devastated when her father eventually sets Hagen free on the streets. Still innocently believing love can conquer any difficulty, Lili sets out to find her dog and save him. Starring Zsófia Psotta, Sándor Zsótér, Lili Horváth, and Szabolcs Thuróczy

From what little the trailer exposes about the story of White God, the visuals more than paint a glorious picture to set expectations high for this foreign feature. The film did not entirely disappoint me, but what unfurled before my eyes was not exactly how I pictured events would take place. I wanted and expected something more fantastical, but what White God is grounded in more realism than I had originally thought. In the overall grand scheme of things, this movie feels more like a short film that’s stretched too thin. It’s overly long, but it is quite masterful to watch all the animals perform. What the filmmakers accomplished for this project is incredible and definitely a really cool concept, but the narrative is hardly interesting.

The Water Diviner (Russell Crowe) Rated R [111 min] – An Australian man travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to try and locate his three missing sons. Starring Russell Crowe, Olga Kurylenko, Jai Courtney, and Isabel Lucas

From the title alone, The Water Diviner is just as boring as you’d believe it to be. There is nothing inherently captivating or moving about Russell Crowe’s plight nor is the storytelling strong enough to keep my attention. All of the performances come across dialed-in and nothing seems entirely cohesive. Most importantly, I didn’t feel like I took away anything from watching the film. And if it was trying to say something it definitely spoke too softly for me to care.

Home (Tim Johnson) Rated PG [94 min] – Oh, an alien on the run from his own people, lands on Earth and makes friends with the adventurous Tip, who is on a quest of her own. Starring Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin, and Jennifer Lopez

I didn’t see Home, but based on the short film with the same character that released in front of Mr. Peabody & Sherman, it was never in my radar to begin with. My dislike for Jim Parsons aside, Home looked meticulously bad. It’s as if it wanted to sabotage from the very beginning. There were more than enough awful jokes in the trailer, I can’t even imagine suffering through an entire movie’s worth. If I had kids, I would only subject them to the movie if they were misbehaving. I would be scratching up the walls if someone made me endure this overly childish looking animated film.

What We Do in the Shadows (Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi) Unrated [86 min] – Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane – like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. Starring Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brugh, and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer

Flying low under the radar, What We Do in the Shadows is one of the best well-kept secrets of the year. It’s hilariously constructed and an absolutely great time. It’s a brisk 86 minutes, but it felt longer for some reason. I guess that’s because there isn’t much that goes on in the film other than the reality that you’re with these vampires. But all the set ups and gags are tremendously humorous.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen The Conqueror of Shamballa. I watched it swiftly after I encountered the series. It’s not as memorable to me as The Sacred Star of Milos, which is on Netflix now. But if you want to save your money, the full Japanese version with English subs is on YouTube right now.

I don’t get around to watching TV much. When I do, it’s typically thanks to screeners or on Netflix. But when I was a wee younger, if nothing else was on, I’d always keep Adult Swim on late at night and watch episodes of Robot Chicken. I had no idea that the show got cancelled, after the sixth season, but I’m glad that they revived the series to get this seventh one made. This season was dark. Maybe it’s changed that way over time? I don’t recall so much death and illicitly explicit sexual humor. Like, this season is really, really dark. I still like it, but the change from goofy, pop culture satire to goofy pop culture satire with more adult humor and penises was quite jarring. In a hilarious way though.

Another incredible movie from earlier this year. It Follows is a tremendous genre film that is riveting, terrifying, and downright eerie. There’s an incredible sense of creativity and wonder when watching the movie because it feels as if a lot of care and planning went into the development of the story and its characters. The world and the rules Mitchell built within framework is engaging and wondrous.

Starring Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult

X-Men: Days of Future Past is a pretty long movie in and of itself. I would consider this Rogue Cut a semi-director’s cut that is more for the fun of adding a different character then really helping the story. The original version is edited very cleanly without the additional content with Anna Paquin. However, there’s even more content sprinkled within that makes it fun to watch. I would prefer the theatrical cut, but the new bonus features are pretty awesome in this edition.

The Longest Ride (George Tillman Jr.) Rated PG-13 [139 min] – The lives of a young couple intertwine with a much older man as he reflects back on a lost love while he’s trapped in an automobile crash. Starring Scott Eastwood, Britt Robertson, Alan Alda, and Jack Huston

I was surprised I didn’t hate this film as much as I thought I would. For as drawn out as it The Longest Ride is, the dual story lines worked to a certain extent. I found that I cared more about the couple from the past than the present. The climax and twist felt very forced, but in the world of Nicholas Sparks it makes perfect sense.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (John Madden) Rated PG [122 min] – As the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for two fresh arrivals – Sonny pursues his expansionist dream of opening a second hotel. Starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle, and David Strathairn

As heartfelt as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is, the wonder and excitement gets a little lost in its sequel. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel comes across too generic, but the cast holds it up as best as they can. Obviously, this film is definitely targeted for a specific audience, but TSBMH has its charms.

Despite creator Pendleton Ward stepping down in the middle of this season, Adventure Time still captures the magic and fun of the Land of Ooo. For those who have not seen this series, it’s an eclectic mix of adult and childish humor for all ages to enjoy. And that’s kind of the incredible thing about Adventure Time. After five seasons, the series still runs strong with new hijinks for Finn and Jake to encounter.

Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell (Chris ‘Casper’ Kelly and Dave Willis) Unrated [11 min] – A live-action workplace comedy about Gary, an associate demon, as he attempts to capture souls on earth in order to climb the corporate ladder of the underworld. Starring Matt Servitto, Craig Rowin, and Henry Zebrowski

As far as Adult Swim content goes, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell is some of the strongest comedy as of late. It’s completely bizarre and inherently bonkers. This world that Kelly and Willis has created works majestically in the best, weirdest way imaginable. It’s as if Ugly Americans had a baby with Workaholics to create this wacky, live-action comedy. And those two series alone should pique your interest to digest this show. It’s short, focused, and to the point in order to get the best laughs for your time.

Little House on the Prairie (Blanche Hanalis) Rated TV-PG [60 min] – The life and adventures of the Ingalls family in the 19th century American West. Starring Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, Lindsay Greenbush, Sidney Greebush, Karen Grassle, and Melissa Sue Anderson

I’ll be honest, I’ve never watched an episode of Little House on the Prairie. Not that it wasn’t my era, because I enjoyed watching shows like The Munsters, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and I Love Lucy. The blu-ray transfer of this beloved show is absolutely stunning for the age of the series. For me, the content is little to be desired, but for those who want something with wholesome values and family-oriented entertainment, LHotP holds up, even in its sixth season. A testament to television production back in the day.

Maggie (Henry Hobson) Rated PG-13 [95 min] – A teenage girl in the Midwest becomes infected by an outbreak of a disease that slowly turns the infected into cannibalistic zombies. During her transformation, her loving father stays by her side. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin, Joely Richardson, and Laura Cayouette (Watch the trailer)

You won’t find Arnold in too many indie films, but from what he brings in Maggie, I want more. Too often do we see the gun-toting badass we know Schwarzenneger can be, but this softer, more dramatic side of the actor is fantastic as well. The movie itself doesn’t quite all add up – the pacing is a bit slow and the movie feels stretched thin – but it’s a solid concept.

Slow West (John Maclean) Rated R [84 min] – Slow West follows a 16-year-old boy on a journey across 19th Century frontier America in search of the woman he loves, while accompanied by mysterious traveler Silas. Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Michael Fassbender, and Ben Mendelsohn

Not your ordinary Western, Slow West dials in some quirky indie personality that doesn’t quite deliver on its promise. There are some fun moments, but the movie doesn’t feel as cohesive as we need it to be. (Read my full review)

Kill Me Three Times (Kriv Stenders) Rated R [90 min] – Professional hit-man Charlie Wolfe finds himself in three tales of murder, blackmail and revenge after a botched contract assignment. Starring Simon Pegg, Teresa Palmer, and Alice Braga

Despite a kooky performance by Simon Pegg, Kill Me Three Times is terribly bland and mostly uninteresting. There’s so many twists and turns the plot wants to take you on, but none of them are rewarding or built up well enough to care.

Absolution (Keoni Waxman) Rated R [96 min] – When a contract killer (Steven Seagal) encounters a girl on the run from a mob boss (Vinnie Jones) with powerful political ties, he is torn between protecting the girl, and remaining loyal to the government agency that hired him for the mission. Starring Steven Seagal, Byron Mann, and Howard Dell

It’s a Steven Seagal movie. You kind of know what you’re getting yourself into. The film is cheap, and Seagal’s goatee is only but one offender of great action films. There’s nothing interesting said or inspired by Absolution.
