cinderella movie 2015

Movies on Blu-ray

Cinderella (Kenneth Branagh) Rated PG [112 min] – When her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her daughters. Never one to give up hope, Ella’s fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger in the woods. Starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, and Helena Bonham Carter (Watch the trailer)

I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw the live-action adaptation of Cinderella in theaters earlier this year. After my first viewing, I rewatched the original 1950 animated film and was shocked at how bad it is. It’s not that it’s too childish, there just isn’t much of a plot or story. Cinderella’s arc in the animated feature is very linear and the movie focuses more on the mice wanting to protect and help Cindy from her step family. What I enjoy about the live-action adaptation is that it puts more weight and humanity into the character of Cinderella. There’s more to resonate with her and more to the story than just love at first sight. It’s still somewhat a part of the story, but Kenneth Brannagh makes it at least seem like the Prince finds more to like about Cinderella than just her looks, but not so much vice versa. Lily James is also really excellent. I could have done without Helena Bonham Carter though.

Special features include:

  • A Fairy Tale Comes to Life: Filmmakers and cast reflect on Cinderella‘s enduring power, along with the many joys and challenges of bringing this iconic tale to life.
  • Costume Test Fun: See the work of Academy Award-winning® Costume Designer Sandy Powell (The Aviator, 2004) and share some lighthearted moments with the cast.
  • Staging The Ball: You’re invited behind the scenes for the making of the Palace Ball sequence, including its spectacular set, stunning costumes and more. It’s a lavish and massive undertaking…and a magical day on set.
  • Ella’s Furry Friends: Discover how the movie’s animal stars honed their memorable performances.
  • Alternate Opening, Ella’s Childhood: View moments from Ella’s idyllic childhood that do not appear in the movie. Introduction by Branagh.
  • Frozen Fever: It’s Anna’s birthday, and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever – but when Elsa catches a cold, her powers may put more than just the party at risk.
  • Deleted Scenes with introduction by Kenneth Branagh (DMA Exclusive)

Love & Mercy (Bill Pohlad) [Limited] Rated PG-13 [120 min] – In the 1960s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, and Paul Giamatti

As far as biopics go, Love & Mercy is fairly well done but maintains the genre’s vanilla flavor. I do like that it’s more of character piece rather than showcasing events around Brian Wilson. All the performances are terrific, especially from Paul Dano. And of course the iconic Beachboys music. What I would have wanted more from Love & Mercy is for John Cusack’s older Wilson to have something else to do rather than him being a tortured character.

Special features include:

  • A California Story: Creating the Look of Love & Mercy” Featurette
  • “A-Side/B-Side: Portraying the Life of Brian Wilson” Featurette
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Audio Commentary with director/producer Bill Pohlad and executive producer/co-writer Oren Moverman

Furious 7: Extended Cut (James Wan) Rated PG-13 [137 min] – Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother. Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, and Kurt Russell (Watch the trailer)

This movie is silly. I can only imagine this extended edition being even sillier. And if you’re really bold you can get the Fast & Furious 1-7 Limited Edition Collection.

Special features include:

  • Extended Cut of the Film
  • Back to the Starting Line: Producer Neal Moritz, Chris Morgan and the cast join franchise newcomer director James Wan as they look back at how far the franchise has come bring the latest installment to life.
  • Race Wars: Furious 7 brings the crew back to Race Wars, the iconic, fictional racing event from the very first film. Vin Diesel and a couple hundred friends are back for a full-throttle celebration of all things Fast with special guest-star Iggy Azalea, behind-the-scenes footage of the cars, the sweat and the girls.
  • Snatch and Grab: A behind the scenes look at shooting one of the premier action sequences in the franchise’s history.
  • Making of Fast & Furious Supercharged Ride
  • The Cars of Furious: The car coordinator and his team join the cast and filmmakers for a closer look at the film’s spectacular cars.
  • Flying Cars: People jump out of planes all the time, but not while sitting behind the wheel of a car. This entertaining featurette shows how the Furious 7 team pulled off this jaw-dropping sequence.
  • Tower Jumps: A look at how one of the most exciting stunt sequences of the film, the Abu Dhabi tower jumps, became a reality.
  • Inside the Fight: A combination of fight training footage and interviews takes viewers inside the fierce hand-to-hand fights.
  • Talking Fast: Director James Wan and the cast of Furious 7 break down the movie’s most memorable moments and chat about how the Fast franchise has evolved over the years.
  • Deleted Scenes
  • “See You Again” Official Music Video Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth

fullmetal alchemist 2003 complete series

Television Series

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Eighth Season (Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady)  A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory. Starring Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar

I’ve given The Big Bang Theory a handful of chances despite my prejudice against the grating, pandering garbage that it is. And now in its eighth season, The Big Bang Theory continues to be that steaming pile but only now more stale. Sheldon is a terrible character who is unrelatable with sidekicks who hardly get enough to do to really resonate with them. I wish this series would end.

Special features include:

  • Shooting Stars: BBT on BBT
  • 2014 The Big Bang Theory Comic-Con Panel
  • Constellation Prize
  • Here’s To You, Carol Ann Susi
  • It’s A Quark… It’s An Atom… It’s the #BBTSuperfans!
  • Gag Reel

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Complete Series (Seiji Mizushima) Rated TV-PG [24 min] – The Elric brothers’ deciding to perform a forbidden human transmutation to bring their dead mother back, they end up losing their bodies. Now Edward must find the chemical privileges to restore their body back.Starring Vic Mignogna, Aaron Dismuke, and Romi Pak

I’m pretty glad I’ve held out for the Blu-ray release of the first Fullmetal Alchemist series. Although it’s not as epic as FMA: Brotherhood it’s still pretty decent. It’s definitely essential viewing before you watch Brotherhood. The Limited Collector’s Edition is insanely awesome, but at almost $300 it’s way too much money.

Special features include:

  • Episode Commentaries
  • The Transmutation of a Phenomenon: An Inside Look
  • Japanese Commercial
  • L’Arc~en~Ciel “Ready Steady Go” Video
  • Ura Hagane: Comedic Previews
  • Textless Opening Songs: Melissa, Ready Steady Go, Undo, Rewrite
  • Textless Closing Songs: Indelible Sin, To the Other Side of the Door, Motherland, I Will

Starring Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, Grace Gealey, Kaitlin Doubleday, and Bryshere Y. Gray

Now Available to Own: The Age of Adaline, Gotham, Super Mario Maker, and More

Brace your bank accounts, it’s time to see what’s Now Available to Own for the week of September 8, 2015. Every Tuesday we run down new movie, television, and video game releases that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, as well as some slick deals that can save you some coin. New on shelves this week are The Age of Adaline, Gotham, Super Mario Maker, and more.

blake lively age of adaline

Movies on Blu-ray

The Age of Adaline (Lee Toland Krieger) Rated PG-13 [110 min] – A young woman, born at the turn of 20th century, is rendered ageless after an accident. After years of a solitary life, she meets a man who might be worth losing her immortality for. Starring Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford, Kathy Baker, Ellen Burstyn, and Amanda Crew

In an age where most romantic films have dissolved into some kind of tween fantasy or a sloppy rom com with poop jokes, The Age of Adaline may have a sci-fi concept but at least it proves that Hollywood still has the capacity to produce an original story about love. Harrison Ford and Blake Lively give very genuine and heartfelt performances that truly speak to their talent. It’s not perfect, as some elements like Adaline’s current romance feel forced, however The Age of Adaline tells a good story enough to where you care about her outcome.

Special features include:

  • Audio Commentary with Director Lee Toland Krieger
  • “A Love Story for the Ages” featurette
  • “Style Throughout the Ages” featurette
  • “Discovering Young Harrison Ford: Anthony Ingruber, An Online Sensation” featurette
  • Deleted Scenes

American Heist (Sarik Andreasyan) Rated R [94 min] – James owes his life to his older brother, Frankie after taking the rap for a crime they committed together. While Frankie served time, James worked to turn his life around, got a steady job and began courting his former girlfriend Emily. Now, Frankie is released and back on the streets with no money and no place to go. Starring Hayden Christensen, Adrien Brody, and Jordana Brewster

Generic, derivative, and lacking any kind of imagination, American Heist simply does not come across as the edgy and stylish cinematic adventure it hopes to be. The title alone says all you need to know about the film. The actors do the best they can, but even the dialogue drags down the movie. Maybe if American Heist came out 20 years ago it would have had folks talking. Instead it wastes the talent of Adrien Brody and my time.

Special features include:

  • “Creating a Complex Caper: Pulling off American Heist” featurette

gotham joker tv show

Television Series

Supernatural: The Complete Tenth Season (Eric Kripke) Rated TV-14 [44 min]Two brothers follow their father’s footsteps as “hunters” fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth. Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, and Misha Collins

It takes a lot of gusto in order keep a series running for 10 seasons. And you can tell by watching this last season of Supernatural that the show has definitely come under some strain. The plot of Season 10 definitely meanders with little purpose while character motivations are hard to understand at times. There definitely are stronger seasons than this. Supernatural is beyond its prime and I hope the producers reach a satisfying ending rather than driving this beloved show into the ground.

Special features include:

  • A Very Special Supernatural Special
  • Supernatural Theatre: Staging the 200th Episode
  • The Winchester Mythology: Battling the Mark and the Blade
  • Supernatural Fans
  • Supernatural at Comic-Con 2014
  • Three (3) Audio Commentaries
  • Deleted Scenes

Gotham: The Complete First Season (Bruno Heller) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – The story behind Commissioner James Gordon’s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman’s arrival. Starring Ben McKenzie, Jada Pinkett Smith, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Robin Lord Taylor

So what’s all the hubbub about Gotham? There isn’t much. I enjoy mostly anything to do with Batman, so I was curious as to how they would approach the material. My biggest problem is that all the interconnected stories of the major players in Gotham feel forced. Young Catwoman doesn’t need to be telling young Bruce Wayne how life on the streets is, it could be anyone or it could be learned differently. Why does [Poison] Ivy have to be a sad orphan girl? She doesn’t have to be a part of the show; her character serves no purpose other than a wink to the fans.

We spend most of our time in the Gotham City Police Department and yet we hardly know anyone on the force and are never given any real reason why the cops that are dirty are the way they are. It’s an underdeveloped show with no depth other than the lore of Batman. Efforts are focused in too many which ways that pertain to Batman and not enough on the main characters who actually serve purpose. There are moments where Gotham teases its full potential and allows itself to take a step away from Batman mythology; this is what I find fascinating. When Gotham can separate itself in order to tell an interesting story set within Gotham City, that’s when the show captures my interest.

Special features include:

  • Extended Pilot Episode
  • Gotham Invented: Building Our Gotham
  • Gotham Invented: Paving the Way for the Caped Crusader
  • Gotham Invented: Fractured Villains of Gotham
  • Designing the Fiction
  • The Game of Cobblepot
  • Gag Reel
  • Unaired Scenes
  • DC Comics Night at Comic-Con 2014 Presenting Gotham, The Flash, Constantine and Arrow
  • GOTHAM: The Legend Reborn
  • Character Profiles

More Titles Now Available (I Haven’t Seen These):

  • Homeland: The Complete Fourth Season
  • Ramma 1/2: Set 7
  • Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
  • The Man Who Wasn’t There
  • American Heist
  • Haven: Season 1 Vol. 1

Video Games

Super Mario Maker [Nintendo] (Available Sept. 11 on Nintendo Wii U) – The Mario experience of your dreams has arrived and is bursting with creativity… including yours! Play a near-limitless number of intensely creative Super Mario levels from players around the world. It’s easy enough to create your own levels with the Wii U GamePad controller that it may feel like you’re simply sketching out your ideas on paper, but you can now bring enemies and objects into a playable course in ways you could only dream of before. What was impossible in traditional Mario games is now impossibly fun, so let your imagination run wild!

I had the chance to play this game at various conventions, but never took it. The concept of the game provides very little appeal to me. However, I commend those who are creative enough to build some pretty unique levels. I see this game being fun for about a week and players growing tired of it thereafter. The novelty of it all will wear off quickly.

Key features:

  • Play a near-limitless number of Mario levels created by Nintendo and players around the world.
  • Create your own Mario levels by using the Wii U GamePad controller touch screen to add enemies, blocks, pipes and more.
  • Break the conventions of traditional Super Mario gameplay by blending enemies, traps and items into unexpected twists, like Piranha Plant-shooting cannons, power-up-tossing Lakitus, or even Hammer Bros. riding on Bowser while bouncing on trampolines..
  • Touch control, instant editing and a robust online ranking and search system makes creating, playing and sharing a seamless process .
  • Switch between four distinct themes, each with different art styles and features:
  • Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U.
  • Transform into different characters at random with the new Mystery Mushroom item. Expand the roster of possible characters by completing 100 Mario Challenge mode or tapping compatible amiibo.
  • Tap a 30th Anniversary Mario amiibo figure to the Wii U GamePad controller to add a Big Mushroom power-up to your course!
  • Each retail copy of the game will come with a special booklet that offers fun ideas for designing courses.

doof warrior fury road

Movies on Blu-ray

Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller) Rated R [120 min] – In a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, two rebels just might be able to restore order: Max, a man of action and of few words, and Furiosa, a woman of action who is looking to make it back to her childhood homeland. Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abbey Lee, and Zoë Kravitz [Watch the trailer]

Mad Max: Fury Road is the reason we go to the movie theaters. It is the epitome of brilliant storytelling in the most visually cinematic and compelling way. All of its incredible parts create a most spectacular whole. Fury Road keeps your attention the entire time, and is absolutely relentless in making sure everything that happens on-screen adds something meaningful to the story. It’s a near perfect movie. [Read my full review]

Special features include:

  • Maximum Fury: Filming Fury Road
  • Mad Max: Fury on Four Wheels
  • The Road Warriors: Max and Furiosa
  • The Tools of the Wasteland
  • The Five Wives: So Shiny, So Chrome
  • Fury Road: Crash & Smash
  • Deleted Scenes

The D Train (Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul) [Limited] Rated R [97 min] – The head of a high school reunion committee travels to Los Angeles to track down the most popular guy from his graduating class and convince him to go to the reunion. Starring Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn, and Jeffrey Tambor (Watch the trailer)

I have not had the pleasure of seeing this movie yet. The D Train feels like more of a Netflix pick than anything else. The whole concept is kind of depressing.

Special features include

  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Digital Copy

Television Series

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season (Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec) Rated TV-14 [43 min] – A high school girl is torn between two vampire brothers. Starring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder

For a show called The Vampire Diaries, it’s rather more engaging and thrilling than you’d expect. I wouldn’t put it on the same level as Buffy, but it has it’s quirks that makes it stand on its own to deliver digestible content. Scanning through this season, there are a lot of pivotal moments that lead to Nina Dobrev’s inevitable exit from the show. It’s a well deserved ending with a big cliffhanger, but I’m not sure it is strong enough to keep fans on board after Elena’s departure.

Special features include:

  • The Vampire Diaries: Good Bite and Good Luck
  • The executive producers and cast of The Vampire Diaries say a final farewell to Nina Dobrev, Steven R. McQueen, Marguerite MacIntyre, and Michael Trevino, after six memorable years.
  • The Vampire Diaries: Best.Reaction.Ever.
  • Fan reactions to big moments throughout the season will be curated from Twitter, fan sites and other social media, and pieced together to tell the story of season six via fans’ reactions.
  • Ep.615 Audio Commentary
  • Writer/Director Julie Plec provides commentary on her directorial debut
  • The Vampire Diaries: 2014 Comic-Con Panel
  • Come Visit Georgia PSA
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Second Bite: Gag Reel

The Originals: The Complete Second Season (Julie Plec) Rated TV-14 [45 min] – The Original vampire family, from The Vampire Diaries, return and settle in the city they helped build, New Orleans. Starring Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, and Phoebe Tonkin

You can definitely feel the strain of this series as it tries to live up to its bigger brother, The Vampire Diaries. I can’t say that the characters or story are able to capture my attention as much as Elena and her journey, but The Originals isn’t the worst thing on television. It’s just not something I would want to devote my time to it on a regular basis.

Special features include:

  • The Originals: Always and Forever – In this featurette, we will hear from cast and creators on how season two explored new depths of what it means to be a family.
  • The Awakening Web Series – Explore this companion series on Kol Mikaelson (Nathaniel Buzolic) and his quest to form an alliance with the witches of New Orleans in 1914. Also, go behind the scenes with the cast and creators of the digital series.
  • The Originals: 2014 Comic-Con Panel
  • Come Visit Georgia PSA
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel

Texas Rising: The TV Mini-Series (Roland Joffé) Rated TV-PG [450 mins] – Texas Rising tells the story of legendary hero Sam Houston and the Republic of Texas’s intense struggle for independence against the forces of fierce Mexican General Santa Anna. Starring Bill Paxton, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Addai-Robinson, and Olivier Martinez

If you’re a history buff, unlike me, you might find Texas Rising insulting to your intelligence and those historians who truly captured what really happened in 1836. The whole mini-series is over glamorized with spark notes, warped to shape a narrative too simple-minded to take seriously. All the actors do the best with that they’re given and carry on. If the story and dialogue were as pretty as the production and cinematography, Texas Rising may have had a shot at being decent.

Special features include:

  • “Capturing the Revolution: Filming Texas Rising” featurette
  • “Sam Houston: A Man of the Revolution” featurette
  • “General Santa Anna: Leading Mexico” featurette

star wars rebels

metal gear solid v the phatom pain

Video Games

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Kojima Productions) [Konami] (Available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC) Taking place nine years after the events of MGSV: Ground Zeroes and the fall of Mother Base, Snake a.k.a. Big Boss, awakes from a nine year coma. The game resumes the story in 1984, with the Cold War still as the backdrop, which continues to shape a global crisis. Snake’s journey takes him into a world where he is driven by a need for revenge and the pursuit of a shadow group, XOF.

Since I didn’t get a review copy and waited patiently for the moment when the Collector’s Edition would become available, I unfortunately haven’t been touched by the critically acclaimed greatness that is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I’ve been a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise ever since I was introduced to Sons of Liberty, MGS2. I had never seen a game like it before. And with the mixture of quirky winks, phenomenal action, and layered storytelling, I was sold instantly. Like any form of entertainment, I try to stay as spoiler free as possible, but from the little gameplay I’ve seen and the trailers, it looks like Hideo Kojima has capped off the series with a masterpiece. I am highly looking forward to this last mission in the Metal Gear universe.

lego justice league attack of the legion of doom

Movies on Blu-ray

Aloha (Cameron Crowe) Rated PG-13 [104 min] – A celebrated military contractor returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs and re-connects with a long-ago love while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him. Starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, and Alec Baldwin [Watch the Trailer]

This movie is pretty much a waste of effort for everyone involved. Aloha’s message is so muddled in bland storytelling that it ultimately makes vanilla sound more appealing.

Special features included:

  • The Untitled Hawaii Project: The Making of Aloha Feature Length Documentary
  • Cast Gag Reel
  • Original Opening (Blu-ray exclusive)
  • Alternate Ending (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Deleted Scenes (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Four All-New Featurettes (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Photo Gallery (Blu-ray exclusive
  • Audio Commentary by Writer/Director Cameron Crowe (Blu-ray exclusive

LEGO Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! (Rick Morales) Unrated [77 min] – Crime is on the run as the newly formed Justice League keeps Metropolis safe and this makes evil genius Lex Luthor very unhappy. Together with Black Manta, Sinestro and a gang of ruthless recruits, Lex builds his own league and declares them the Legion of Doom. With this super powered team of terror and a plan to attack the top-secret government site, Area 52, can Lex finally be on the verge of victory? Starring Troy Baker, Nolan North, Josh Keaton, Khary Payton, James Arnold Taylor, Grey Griffin, Mark Hamill, and John DiMaggio

For a fun little LEGO movie, Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! is great for the kids and highly tolerable for parents. The voice acting is solid and the action is pretty entertaining. Its only faults is that the story is pretty predictable and the level of animation is straight to home video quality. Otherwise, it’s a decent sit for the short run time.

Special features include:

  • Featurette – “Click, Zap, Boom! Creating the Sound Design” – This fun documentary goes behind the scenes with the talented sound design and foley team to explore how LEGO® sounds are created live on stage and then edited into the final movie.

Where Hope Grows (Chris Dowling) Rated PG-13 [95 min] – A baseball player whose professional career was cut short due to his personal problems is suddenly awakened and invigorated by a young-man with Down syndrome who works at the local grocery store. Starring Kristoffer Polaha, David DeSanctis, and Danica McKellar

I’m not big on spiritual films, but Where Hope Grows is a lot better than some of the other faith-based, spoon fed dribble that’s been out in theaters lately. There is some potential for a good story here, however the third act completely derails the whole movie leaving little hope for redemption.

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • “Casting David DeSanctis” featurette
  • “Stop the R-Word” featurette
  • Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Chris Dowling and Actor David DeSanctis

Two Days, One Night (Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne) Rated PG-13 [95 min] – Sandra, a young Belgian mother, discovers that her workmates have opted for a significant pay bonus, in exchange for her dismissal. She has only one weekend to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses so that she can keep her job. Starring Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Catherine Salée, and Batiste Sornin

I have yet to see this critically lauded film, but if you want to check Two Days, One Night before you buy it, the movie is now available on Netflix streaming.

Special features include:

  • New 2K digital transfer, approved by directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New interviews with the Dardennes and actors Marion Cotillard and Fabrizio Rongione
  • When Léon M.’s Boat Went Down the Meuse for the First Time (1979), a forty-five minute documentary by the Dardennes, featuring a new introduction by the directors
  • New tour of the film’s key locations with the directors
  • Trailer
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Girish Shambu

CitizenFour (Laura Poitras) Rated R [114 min] – A documentarian and a reporter travel to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with Edward Snowden.Starring Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald, and William Binney

I have not had the chance to check this film out yet. It did win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, so there’s that.

Special features include:

  • Bonus Scenes
  • New York Times Talk with Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald, Edward Snowden and David Carr
  • Film Society of Lincoln Center Q&A with Laura Poitras
  • “The Program” – A New York Times Op-Doc by Laura Poitras

the walking dead season 5 glenn

Television Series

The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Season (Scott M. Gimple) Police officer Rick Grimes leads a group of survivors in a world overrun by zombies. Starring Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yuen, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Emily Kinney, and Danai Gurira

The fifth season of The Walking Dead is definitely a transitional one. It starts off on a high-note, but takes a sharp turn that can really make or break fans. When the survivors arrive at their destination in the second half of the season, it’s a real testament to the writers to build such great tension with little action. It’s a great calm before the storm because, as a reader of the comic, Season 6 will be insane.

Special features include:

  • Audio commentaries
  • Inside The Walking Dead
  • The Making of The Walking Dead
  • The Making of Alexandria
  • Beth’s Journey
  • Bob’s Journey
  • Noah’s Journey
  • Tyreese’s Journey
  • A Day in the Life of Michael Cudlitz
  • A Day in the Life of Josh McDermitt
  • Rotters in the Flesh

Criminal Minds: The Complete Tenth Season (Jeff Davis) Rated TV-14 [42 min] – The cases of the BAU, an elite group of profilers who analyze the nation’s most dangerous criminal minds in an effort to anticipate their next moves before they strike again. Starring Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Thomas Gibson

With the inclusion of Jennifer Love Hewitt to spice up the tenth season, Criminal Minds shows signs of wear. I’ve never been a fan of crime procedurals, but I thought I would check this series out to see why the series has been on television for so long. It’s pretty formulaic as most procedurals go and the main stars are holding on by a thread to muster up the energy to continue on with the same old routine.

Special features include:

  • Criminal Minds: Top Ten
  • Easter Egg: “Payback’s An Itch”

Elementary: The Complete Third Season (Robert Doherty)  Rated TV-14 [60 min]  |  Crime, Drama, MysterySeason 4 PremiereSep 20157.9Your rating:-/10Ratings: 7.9/10 from 61,287 usersReviews: 174 user | 35 criticA modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, with the detective now living in New York City. Starring Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, and Aidan Quinn

Another series I have not had the pleasure of watching, but only this time I jumped at the chance to check it out. I am a big proponent of the other modern take of Sherlock Holmes on the BBC, so I figured I’d see how Elementary took on the subject matter. Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu may not be on the same level of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, however they do have good chemistry, and that’s important for a Holmes-Watson relationship. The gender change is quite an interesting dynamic as well, that brings a different perspective to the dynamic duo. It’s a decent show, and from what I watched of this season it was mostly good.

Special features include:

  • Watson Style
  • Hello Kitty
  • Partners In Crime: Elementary Season 3
  • Deleted Scene
  • Elements Of Deduction
  • Bell on the Scene
  • Gag Reel

The Good Wife: The Complete Sixth Season (Michelle King and Robert King) Rated TV-14 [60 min] – Alicia has been a good wife to her husband, a former state’s attorney. After a very humiliating sex and corruption scandal, he is behind bars. She must now provide for her family and returns to work as a litigator in a law firm. Starring Julianna Margulies, Chris Noth, Matthew Goode, and Josh Charles

Anytime I hear about The Good Wife people won’t shut up about it. So here I am, another series I haven’t gotten on the bandwagon for, and had the opportunity to check out. From what I’ve seen, The Good Wife has some solid tension, but begins to falter halfway through. I have not finished it yet, and hope that it turns itself around. All of the performances are top notch, and I can see why this show continues to earn nominations at the Emmys. I will go back and check out the rest of the episodes starting from Season 1 as soon as I have the time.

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • Follow The Leader: Inside the Season Finale
  • The Temptation Of Alicia Florrick: The Good Wife- Season Six
  • The Esteemed Women of Sunday Nights

Revenge: The Complete Fourth and Final Season (Mike Kelley) Rated TV-PG [44 min] – An emotionally troubled young woman makes it her mission to exact revenge against the people who wronged her father. Starring Madeleine Stowe, Emily VanCamp, and Gabriel Mann

Not a series I have seen nor had the chance to review, but from what I’ve heard it’s OK.

Special features include:

  • Bloopers
  • Deleted Scenes

The Mindy Project: The Complete Third Season (Mindy Kaling) Rated TV-14 [30 min] – A young Ob/Gyn doctor balances her personal and professional life, surrounded by quirky co-workers in a small office. Starring Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina, and Ike Barinholtz

Sadly, I have not see this show or had the opportunity to review it. I’ve heard that this season kind of meanders and is beginning to show a lack of creativity and wit. Not good when you have a hit comedy on your hands.

Special features include:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
