D23 Expo 2015: Shakira Joins the ‘Zootopia’ Cast and Two Clips Previewed

As the first of the many big announcements we’ll learn this weekend at Disney’s fourt D23 Expo, it was revealed during the Walt Disney Animation Studios panel that international superstar Shakira has joined the Zootopia voice cast as the character Gazelle. Mirroring her professional career, Shakira’s character is the biggest pop sensation in Zootopia. Zootopia Gazelle Shakira Character Art

The singer was not present at the event, but a pre-recorded message appeared on screen for fans to see the Shakira make the announcement. In attendance, Ginnifer Goodwin, who lends her voice to the rabbit officer Judy Hopps, was joined by directors Byron Howard (Tangled) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph), as well as producer Clark Spencer.

In order to capture a fully realized animal kingdom, Moore and Howard described on stage their process of visiting wild areas of Kenya to study behavior and movements of animals in their natural habitats. They also researched animal biology and shared their insights with attendees that polar bear fur is not white, but clear. So they worked with their animation team to make sure the CG polar bear character’s hundred of thousands of hairs were clear. That’s just one aspect out of the thousands of animals living in the world of that will depicted in the film.

The filmmakers went on to discuss the animal neighborhoods, such as the upscale Dubai like Sahara Square; the snowy Russian-like territory of Tundra Town; the humid Rainforest District; and the over populated Bunny District that is host to millions of rabbits living in bunny-shaped houses built.

The Zootopia teaser trailer was released earlier this year, and fans in attendance got to see two clips, plus a tease of an all-new original song, “Try Anything,” written by Sia and performed by Shakira.

The first clip featured Judy Hopps, who comes from the outskirts of town with big city dreams. An ambitious fresh cop on the Zootopia police force, Judy is stuck on parking meter duty due to her size while bigger animals like rhinos and hippos carry out more “important” tasks. Judy is seen eating lunch at a local ice cream parlor run by an elephant. Here she encounters Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a con-man fox, who stops in with a little white fox he claims is his son. After a bit of coaxing, the elephant gives Wilde a jumbo pop on the house, which the sly fox then breaks apart into smaller pieces and sells individually.

The second clip shows both Nick and Judy arriving at a DMV to get some paperwork. Unfortunately for them, the DMV is operated by sloths, which delivers some comical satire. By the time Judy and Nick get what they’re looking for hours have passed as Flash the sloth works as diligently to complete their request.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Zootopia, courtesy of Walt Disney Animation Studios:

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps  arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery.

Zootopia is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2016.

Newest GOOD DINOSAUR Trailer Presents Kindness and Adventure [64 Screenshots]

Following the success of last month’s Inside Out, Pixar is back for all the feels with The Good Dinosaur, the studio’s second animated feature of 2015. Showcasing the studio’s gorgeous signature animation, in a film that is guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings of children and adults alike, this latest trailer for The Good Dinosaur opens with its teaser and then expands on its question: what would happen if the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs missed Earth?

Pixar brings us the answer through the friendship off adorably clumsy Arlo (Raymond Ochoa), the green Apatosaurus and his equally sweet human friend Spot (Jack Bright). The two and a half minute spot largely consists of beautiful pre-historic visuals layered over “Crystals” by Monsters & Men, so we aren’t given a whole lot of characterization or clues through the one word of dialogue given.

After facing production issues and being pushed back from its original 2013 release date, The Good Dinosaur is finally getting its debut. Pixar replaced its original director Bob Peterson with Peter Sohn (Partly Cloudy) due to problems with the movie’s third act. The Good Dinosaur trailer still presents a fairly vague story, which could mean the marketing team actually doesn’t want to give away spoilers, they actually want to slowly build the story through these trailers, or they’re trying to hide the fact that The Good Dinosaur still has its problems.

Due to the open-ended nature of The Good Dinosaur trailer, we’re left with a lot of questions. Where is Arlo traveling to? How does a human and dinosaur become friends? What dangers will these two unlikely friends face? There’s still plenty of time between now and Thanksgiving for Pixar to unfold more of this story, and I look forward to it.

The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

Directed by Peter Sohn, The Good Dinosaur stars the voices of Lucas Neff, John Lithgow, Francis McDormand, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris, and Judy Greer. This film is set to play in theaters on November 25, 2015.

ZOOTOPIA Teaser Trailer Introduces Disney Fans to a New Animal Kingdom [44 Screenshots]

Introduced at D23 Expo 2013, Walt Disney Animation Studios has now released its first Zootopia teaser trailer. Inviting audiences of all ages to explore the vast world of this new animal kingdom concocted by the House of Mouse, the concept bares similarities to Lisberger Studios’ 1980 film Animalympics. You know, that one movie where the animals were also anthropomorphic and competed against each other in their own Olympic games to show that although we are different, we can celebrate life and the importance of mutual respect.

And the Zootopia teaser trailer basically acknowledges the same direction. Proving that being different does not mean we must hate or fight one another, but it can bring us together to solve bigger problems. A message many of us could bear to comprehend more often.

The video is cute and playful, though it doesn’t provide any kind of story; just the conflict. Looking closely at each animal as they pass by, it’s funny to see a lion in a business suit or a rhino in full police gear or a sloth making its way to work – business must be slow for them.

And here’s the original plot synopsis that was provided during D23 Expo; it adds a little more context to the one above:

In the animal city of Zootopia, a fast-talking fox who’s trying to make it big goes on the run when he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Zootopia’s top cop, a self-righteous rabbit, is hot on his tail, but when both become targets of a conspiracy, they’re forced to team up and discover even natural enemies can become best friends.

Directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, Zootopia stars the voices of Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin. The film is set to release in theaters on March 4, 2016.

Pixar’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ Teaser Trailer Asks “What If?” [25 Screenshots]

If you felt a little empty inside last year, that’s because Pixar did not have an animated release. It was a first for the animation studio – between The Incredibles and Cars – since 2005. Inside Out opens in theaters on June 19, but to make up for what was suppose to release last year, Pixar has another film opening this Thanksgiving. The first teaser for The Good Dinosaur appeared today asking audiences “what if?”

For how long they’ve had to work on The Good Dinosaur, Pixar doesn’t really provide us with much of anything in terms of what it’s about. The “what if” scenario is fun to think about for a second, but there is really nothing here to judge whether or not they’ll execute a good story based on that premise. I get some of that classic Pixar humor peeking its head out with the asteroid flying over the Earth, and the character designs are fine.

Last year, John Lithgow stated they completely reimagined the story, so I’m looking forward to what the studio can bring with a full-length trailer. The director, Peter Sohn made his big debut with the Pixar short “Partly Cloudy.” He has since been a part of Pixar within their art, story, and animation departments. He has also voiced the characters of Emile from Ratatouille and Scott “Squishy” Squibbles from Monsters University.

Special ‘The Force Awakens’ Updates from Vanity Fair’s Star Wars Day Celebration

It’s Star Wars Day! And in celebration, Vanity Fair snagged an exclusive first look at the upcoming J.J. Abrams joint, a little film called Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The contemporary, pop culture and fashion mag brought portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz to shoot on location for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Leibovitz is no stranger to capturing iconic moments as she recently shot the Kanye West-Kim Kardashsian wedding dress cover for Vogue. Not only has VF pulled back the elusive SW curtain, but they have also confirmed a few character speculations many Bothans have been dying to know the answer to.

Thanks to this video, we are treated to our first look at Adam Driver on the set of The Force Awakens, who plays a Sith Lord by the name of Kylo Ren. What’s interesting about this incredible reveal is that it shows him in character without the mask, something the trailers have yet to include.

The photo shoot also brings us a closer look at Daisy Ridley in character as Rey who can be seen atop her speeder. (I got a chance to see the speeder in person at Star Wars Celebration last month.) There are also moments inside the Millennium Falcon’s cockpit with Ridley, as well as Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and John Boyega (Finn).

(Click on any image below to begin the gallery)

Now while those pointing fingers at Driver to be the man behind the mask can rest at ease knowing they were right, we’ve not had any clue as to who Oscar winner Lupito Nyong’o would be playing. From the Vanity Fair article published today, we learn that Lupita has donned a mo-cap suit to embody her CGI rendered character, Maz Katana, a space pirate whose good fortune allow her to own a castle with many colorful guests, which you can see below.

Another huge confirmation in this month’s issue is that Gwendoline Christie is in fact the chrome Stormtrooper who goes by the name of Captain Phasma. She is a leader amongst The First Order, the remnants of the Galactic Empire. And on the other side of the coin, the Rebel Alliance is now known as The Resistance – maybe they’ll sing “Do You Hear the Ewoks Sing”? One can assume that Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, will be one of the top pilots of the Resistance.

(Click on any image below to begin the gallery)

And on a hilarious note to end on, Abrams teased fans that he’d thought about killing the infamous Jar Jar Binks,

“I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks’s bones in the desert there. I’m serious! Only three people will notice, but they’ll love it.”

There are still many secrets to be uncovered, which we hope to see as we draw closer to the end of the year.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars John Boyega as Finn, Daisy Ridley as Kira Rey, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join the stars of the original trilogy, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, and Kenny Baker as R2-D2. The film is set to release on December 18, 2015.

May the Fourth be with you! This issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands on May 12, the digital edition will be out May 7.

Second ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Teaser Trailer – “Chewie, We’re Home” [50 Screenshots + 26 GIFs]

All hands on deck! The hottest new teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens dropped during Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim today. Writer/producer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy took to the stage with the film’s stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaacs, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew to introduce the new teaser.

Take a moment.

Cry.

Breath.

Rewatch.

Repeat.

Can you even imagine if this was the first teaser they released back in November? I can’t even believe it’s been that long since we’ve seen footage and nothing has leaked aside from those character posters of Sith Lord Kylo Ren yesterday. This trailer has all new footage, not a single shot was repeated from the first one, and it’s even mixed with John William’s original score from Episode IV: A New Hope.

We have ourselves here a new looks at Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron. And of course, we cannot forget the iconic shot of Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) together again; and boy does it feel good. There is also an ominous shot of what appears to be Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and his mechanical hand with R2-D2. Hamill can also be heard, in narration only, reciting a similar monologue from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi to an unknown person that he believes also has the powers of the Force. Who could it be?

Other questions we must inquire about: who is running the Empire now? Why didn’t they show any footage of Leia? And who’s that silver Stormtrooper?

This is what dreams are made of here people. Hopefully everyone’s excitement won’t be built up only to be let down if the movie doesn’t live up to our expectations.

Here’s the official teaser poster:

They will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa [Solo?] Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, and Kenny Baker as R2-D2. Final Inside Out Trailer Explores the Mind of Riley [124 Screenshots]

With just a few months to go, Pixar has released their last Inside Out trailer, which finally gives us a hint at what the meat of the story will consist of. Releasing this June, the animation studio is going to take moviegoers on a wild ride of emotions, literally. From Imagination Land to Dream Productions Studios, this latest Inside Out trailer gives us a lay of the land within mind of Riley, the little girl whose emotions we will spend the majority of the time with.

The previous Inside Out trailer does an excellent job setting up the mechanics of how the five emotions work inside our heads; they consist of Joy, Fear, Sadness, Anger, and Disgust. While the group takes turns managing Riley’s emotional state, from what this final trailer suggests, somehow Joy and Sadness get sucked out of their little base of operations and must find their way back. The world inside the mind of Riley that director Pete Doctor and company have created looks expansive, details of which I wouldn’t expect anything less from Pixar.

How will not having two core emotions at the helm play out for Riley? What affects will that have on her toward others and her parents? These are but a few questions that this trailer brings to my mind. What I really wonder about is whether or not Inside Out will touch on how present day parents deal with their kids’ emotions. Pixar movies tend to always hit home on big resonating themes that they could touch on certain disorders or imbalances that parents these days try to keep an eye out for as their kids develop as a person. With two emotions out of the picture, Riley might not be her usual charming self as we see in the dinner scene.

(Click on the thumbnails below to enlarge the images)

Here is the official plot synopsis for Inside Out, courtesy of Walt Disney Studios:

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Directed by Pete Docter, Inside Out stars the voices of Amy Poehler, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, Phyllis Smith, Lori Alan, Kaitlyn Dias, and Kyle MacLachlan.

Inside Out hits theaters everywhere on June 19, 2015.
