2014 Writers Guild of America Awards Winners

Last night the Writers Guild of America had their little get together to announce their favorites of 2013. Her (Spike Jonze) and Captain Phillips (Billy Ray) walked away with the top honors for Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplays, respectively. Two choices that were big surprises at the awards last night. It’s always fun to shake things up during Oscar season and there’s no better awards than screenplays to keep us on our toes. Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead in Apartment

News broke today that Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, age 46, was found dead earlier this morning in his West Village apartment of Manhattan. The New York City police department are still determining the cause of death in conjunction with the medical examiner. Nothing has been confirmed, but a report from the New York Post has thrown drugs into the mix and are claiming he was discovered with a hypodermic needle in his arm. It’s not enough that Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Lopez, and Matthew McConaughey withered away the goodwill of traditional romantic comedies for everyone, but I fear we have now reached a point where raunchy romantic comedies are becoming too commercial. Films such as American Pie, Superbad, Van Wilder, and Eurotrip paved the way for today’s take on the subgenre, sprinkling in hilarious over the top sexual innuendos and gags around fun, resonating stories. But because we celebrated the taboo too blindly we now have movies like That Awkward Moment, which drowns itself with raunch for the sake of raunch and never truly finds its own skin.
