There are hundreds of movie trailers released each year, which many of the films promoted we do not get the chance to see or we brush them off because of poor marketing. But if we don’t take the risk and never open our movie palettes to embrace the unknown, how will we ever know what’s good? There were plenty of movies in 2012 that I had very low expectations for, but after sitting down and watching what were assumably stinkers, I had discovered I was completely wrong to misjudge them. See the most surprising films of 2012 after the break. Continue reading

Every year, hundreds of movies are released, some more anticipated than others. Trailers, images, interviews, and more surrounding these highly awaited films build so much hype that they can reach critical levels of expectations. But when they don’t live up to what we believe is promised, cognitive dissonance sets in. There were a lot of movies in 2012 that weren’t noteworthy, but there were 10 that stood out as big disappoints. See the full list after the break. Continue reading
‘Gangster Squad’ Movie Review; Disappointing and Riddled With Bullet Holes
Flashy and full of camp, Gangster Squad borrows elements from The Untouchables and L.A. Confidential to poorly recreate what we’ve already seen before. Based on the book, Tales from the Gangster Squad, written by Paul Lieberman, director Ruben Fleischer has given audiences a generic, mediocre fun look into the mob genre by presenting a big picture told simply and leaving many questions unanswered. Continue reading
The Bottom of the Barrel: Top 10 Worst Movies of 2012

As much as I enjoy the thrill of going to the movies, there comes a time when a stinker passes by that makes you truly appreciate good filmmaking. Some movies can be completely forgettable, but there are others so terrible that they can cause a traumatic experience. These are not even close to movies that are so bad they’re good, they are just plain awful. Allowing myself to give any movie a chance, I had the pleasure of seeing some of the most wretchedly deplorable flicks of last year. Check out the worst movies of 2012 after the break. ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ Movie Review: Adding a Twist Does Not Redeem Bad Writing
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has been passed around to various studios more times than a party favor at a Snoop Dogg concert, which has been quite difficult for many of the reiterations to keep any sort of continuity. Finding a home at Twisted Pictures, Texas Chainsaw 3D acts as a straight sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original. Betting it all on a semi-twist ending to redirect the timeline, TC3D is riddled with bad writing, weak scares, and is a pathetic attempt of 3D. Continue reading

Retro Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 3

Paranormal Activity was a step in the right direction for horror. Unfortunately the follow up, Paranormal Activity 2, took audiences a step backward. Lucky for us, Paranormal Activity 3 pushes the found footage franchise two steps forward. With new directors and a terrific cast, PA3 resuscitates the Where’s Waldo of horror movies and brings us the best scares yet. Continue reading

A friend recently issued me a challenge: come up with a top 10 list of the best horror films that are not torture porn or similar to Paranormal Activity. I accepted this challenge with the intention of upping the stakes: find good horror that is also more recent to this millennium that are not sequels, remakes or based on a zombie or virus like apocalypse. If you are looking for some new scares beyond the classics, take a spoiler-free journey after the jump to find out what you’ve been missing out on in the horror world lately. Continue reading
Retro Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 2

As many may know, a certain little horror franchise recently released it’s fourth film, Paranormal Activity 4. I was a huge advocate of the first film and like any ongoing franchise, a marathon of each entry is a must. Take a look back at Paranormal Activity 2 with me and see if it withstands the test of horror time or if Paranormal Activity was just a one-time gimmick. Continue reading
Movie Review: Hypothermia

October wouldn’t be complete without a good old fashioned chill down the back of the neck. I always try to discover new horror films that may become new favorites, but sometimes there are movies so horrendous they aren’t worth the film they are printed on. Hypothermia is such a film.
