Leak Brings Warner Bros. to Release ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Trailer Early [39 Screenshots + 21 GIFs]

This past Wednesday, director Zack Synder promised the world that a teaser for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would be unleashed unto the world on Monday, April 20, 2015. Unfortunately some greedy, impatient people had other intentions. Last night, an English dubbed trailer with Portuguese subtitles was leaked and spread across the Internet like wildfire. Following Marvel Studios’ lead when it happened to Avengers: Age of Ultron, Warner Bros. released the Batman v Superman trailer today to give fans a full-HD version rather than a shaky blurred one.

As far as teaser trailers go, especially with how grandiose the new Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens teaser is, this Dawn of Justice teaser is pretty unimpressive on a visual scale for what could be a huge blockbuster in 2016. There’s been a lot of haters throwing shade at how dark and brooding this film looks, but I’m feeling it. I think fans are all upset because DC and WB didn’t set up enough mythology in their new shared Cinematic Universe to warrant this big showdown. And I’m with them. But I like the direction the story is going. The one thing I wish they included, one of many items, is the glowing red eyes of Superman that was seen during the Comic-Con teaser last year. I’m assuming they don’t want him to come off as that bad of a guy.

So many complained about Superman’s (Henry Cavill) careless destruction in Man of Steel and demanded repercussions for his actions. Well it looks to me as though we’ll be seeing those consequences take form, justice if you will. It’s just a first teaser and too many people are quick to judge less than two minutes of footage. I think the conversation that it builds up to before the “False God” statue is revealed is alluring, and you can hear Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor chime in at one point saying, “We know better now don’t we. Devils don’t come from hell beneath us, they come from the sky.”

There is certainly a power dynamic that the world is seeking to balance, and it looks like only Batman (Ben Affleck) seems up for the job; because the teaser definitely doesn’t show Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, or Cyborg. And that’s all well and good. I’m sure they’re only in the movie as brief cameos.

The one thing that does irk me about this teaser is Batman’s one line; it’s pretty silly. This is the best reaction to the last line of the teaser:

So I’m good to go for this for now until future trailers show me otherwise.

As I said, the original plan was for the teaser to debut on Monday until this leak happened. Warner Bros. even set up special screening events at certain IMAX theaters to play the teaser on the big screen – free passes are now unavailable and all have been claimed. So why should folks go out of their way to see the teaser at a theater when it’s now available online? Well Zack Snyder claims that additional footage has been added to reward those who come out to see it.

On one side of the coin, Warner Bros. created a different kind of marketing gimmick to encourage fans to get out and see a teaser the way it should be seen, on the big screen. But on the other side, they could have waited a month to release it and put it in front of Mad Max: Fury Road to increase ticket sales for their own movie. It’s a marketing gamble that I hope won’t be a growing trend.

Directed by Zack Snyder, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen aka The Flash, Jason Mmoa as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone aka Cyborg, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. The movie is set to release in theaters on March 25, 2016.

Second ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Teaser Trailer – “Chewie, We’re Home” [50 Screenshots + 26 GIFs]

All hands on deck! The hottest new teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens dropped during Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim today. Writer/producer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy took to the stage with the film’s stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaacs, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew to introduce the new teaser.

Take a moment.

Cry.

Breath.

Rewatch.

Repeat.

Can you even imagine if this was the first teaser they released back in November? I can’t even believe it’s been that long since we’ve seen footage and nothing has leaked aside from those character posters of Sith Lord Kylo Ren yesterday. This trailer has all new footage, not a single shot was repeated from the first one, and it’s even mixed with John William’s original score from Episode IV: A New Hope.

We have ourselves here a new looks at Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron. And of course, we cannot forget the iconic shot of Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) together again; and boy does it feel good. There is also an ominous shot of what appears to be Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and his mechanical hand with R2-D2. Hamill can also be heard, in narration only, reciting a similar monologue from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi to an unknown person that he believes also has the powers of the Force. Who could it be?

Other questions we must inquire about: who is running the Empire now? Why didn’t they show any footage of Leia? And who’s that silver Stormtrooper?

This is what dreams are made of here people. Hopefully everyone’s excitement won’t be built up only to be let down if the movie doesn’t live up to our expectations.

Here’s the official teaser poster:

They will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa [Solo?] Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, and Kenny Baker as R2-D2. Marvel’s Full-Length ‘Ant-Man’ Trailer Boasts Sizable Fun (157 Screenshots)

For those naysayers who thought Ant-Man wouldn’t live up to an Avengers-caliber hero based on its first teaser trailer, Marvel has now released a full-length trailer to put those fears to rest. Premiering a slew of new footage featuring title star in action, this final film to bookend Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks to be a lot of fun.

I like it. And I wouldn’t be ashamed to say that the end of the trailer with Thomas the Tank Engine tickled my tummy. With all the Avengers running wild in Phase 2, this is only the second and final origin story fans will receive this round. There will be a whole batch of new characters to meet in Phase 3, but Hank Pym and Scott Lang are closing it out, taking a bow, and providing the encore to Avengers: Age of Ultron. But what a strange note to end it on?

The dynamic of comedy and action is a bit of step back in tone compared to Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’s like Ant-Man is here to cleanse our pallet between Age of Ultron and Civil War. Based on this trailer, Ant-Man is a more intimate story on a literally smaller scale, and I kind of like that. After a high-stakes, action blockbuster like Age of Ultron, which I cannot wait to see, it will be interesting to gain Scott Lang’s perspective on the aftermath of it all.

The trailer shows a decent amount of the story and some of the fun action. Those who are unfamiliar with the character can get a good understanding of his capabilities – and they even play on the humor of those who agree his name is quite silly. With team Feige watching over Peyton Reed’s direction, I’m sure this film will fit adequately into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we’ll all give a warm welcome to Paul Rudd just like we did Chris Pratt.

One spoiler note (highlight the text to unveil my thoughts): I’m sure I’m not the only one who assumes this, but I believe Marvel is playing down Ant-Man’s powers because in the comics not only can he shrink down to the size of an ant, but he can also grow to the size of a tall building. And I’m guessing him growing to that large scale size will be the big finale they’re keeping out of the promotions. End Spoiler.

Here’s the official plot synopsis from Marvel:

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Judy Greer as Maggie, Tip “Ti” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Wood Harris as Gale, Jordi Mollà as Castillo and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. This film is set to be released in theaters on July 17, 2015.

WonderCon 2015: Sinister 2 Teaser Revealed; First Trailer on its Way Soon

Sinister 2 Teaser Footage WonderCon 2015

During the WonderCon 2015 Blumhouse Productions panel yesterday, the folks who set out to frighten us each year teased something special would come for those who sat through to the end. That big announcement came in the form of promo teaser for Sinister 2. Dubbed “Warning,” this short little snippet of footage gave heed to the terror we’ll be seeing come August 21. Watch the video after the break. Continue reading

WonderCon 2015: Blumhouse Teases Footage from ‘The Gallows’ [Updated w/ Video and Screenshots!]

[UPDATE: The teaser trailer dropped today (4/16) and we have it here for you!]

Not much is known about Blumhouse Productions‘ summer found footage film The Gallows – set for a July 10 release – but during their WonderCon panel we got a first look at some footage. Without giving away too much, the short clip delivered quite a scare to those in attendance. After the break, learn more about how the film came to Blumhouse’s attention and what shocked audiences.

It was announced late last year that Warner Bros.‘ New Line Cinema set the 2015 summer release for The Gallows. The film caught the eye of Management 360 via a trailer on YouTube, who then brought it to producer Jason Blum.

“We saw a rough cut of this and I really loved it. We were a little bit cautious of this now about found footage. There were a lot of these found footage movies that weren’t that good and just because they were found footage people would watch them. Now I almost feel like people are a little tired of it [found footage], so for it to catchit has to be really good. I just thought this movie felt unbelievably authentic, like no found footage movie I’ve seen in a long time.”

After a flurry of found footage films due to the success of Paranormal Activity, The Gallows impressed Blum for being anti-Hollywood.

“The other thing I should say is that the best found footage scary movies I think is the way Oren’s Paranormal Activity was this crew was two people and they did it totally off the grid in his own house and away from Hollywood, and that’s how these guys made these movie.”

While shooting his thesis, aspiring film school student from Nebraska, Chris Lofing asked Travis Cluff to do stunt work for his movie. (Cluff was fresh off his stint on the reality show Wipe Out – who became the first person to successfully cross the Tipsy Towers. He won his episode too.) The two built a friendship and moved up to Fresno from Los Angeles where they conceived and shot the film.

Most low budget horror films, especially of the found footage variety, generally cast unknowns. Lofing and Cluff explained briefly on their casting process.

“We almost knew immediately who we wanted and they’re really are characters who are related to anyone who has been to high school.”

As a found footage film, the duo did not use a director of photography and had his cast hold the cameras, something that also drew Blum to the project.

“People in jeopardy tend not to hold a camera. But these guys found an organic way to scare people.”

As I said, during the panel a small clip of the film was introduced by Blumhouse’s director of development, Ryan Turek. What we saw was fairly short, but it packed a punch. There was no context to the clip, or how the character shown came to be in her situation, but it was quite the terrifying situation.

[SPOILER: Scene description]

What was shown was one of the lead stars, Cassidy Gifford, scared and alone with only the red tint of emergency exit lights to guide her. As the lights flicker, like they typically do in horror films, we see a shadowy figure appear behind her. From what I recall, he was wearing a white shirt with dark pants while holding a noose. We are now zoomed in close to her face, similarly to a scene in The Blair Witch Project. As the camera pans further away from her face we see scar tissue and scrapes along her neck. The frame pauses for the audience to take in the horror. Cassidy is then jerked by the noose that wraps around her neck and then dragged away on the floor. Whether she survives we’ll find out this summer.

[END SPOILER]

Second ‘Poltergeist’ Trailer Continues to Proves Superfluousness [50 Screenshots]

As the impeding threat of the latest horror remake, Poltergeist, draws ever near, the marketing continues to batten down the hatches to confirm that it will have all your favorite bits from the original. If you’ve never seen the 1982 horror film, I guess this film is shrouded in interesting mystery and full of some frights, but for true fans, this latest trailer is pretty much a slap in the face.

I’d like to understand the necessity of this Poltergeist remake other than the fact that they needed to update the television set for this generation. They might as well make a modern version of You’ve Got Mail because AOL is extinct and people use Tinder now. Sam Rockwell is amazing in most any role he touches, but I’m dumbfounded on the idea that someone saw this necessary to remake.

Most of this footage is rehashed from the first trailer, only this time voiced over by the typecasted Jared Haris, who lays down the foundation of plot for the uninitiated. While he delivers a most bland explanation of what’s happening to the Bowen family, scenes mirroring the original flash by to ensure that this Poltergeist reboot is as superfluous as someone texting in a movie theater. There’s no place for it and it makes me rather upset.

The practical effects of the original are more wonderful to behold when viewing the original Poltergeist. From the scene in the bathroom to the tree to the closet door to the house of cards, it’s all better to see that practically done than with over the top CGI. Please Hollywood, just stop.

Here’s the, courtesy of 20th Century Fox, for those who have never seen the original Poltergeist before:

Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

Directed by Gil Kenan, Poltergeist stars Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon, Sharbino, Kyle Catlett, Kennedi Clements, and Nicholas Braun. This film hits theaters on July 24, 2015.

Second ‘Spy’ Trailer Is Ready for Action [106 Screenshots]

Set to release in theaters this June, I still have my doubts about director Paul Feig’s latest venture, Spy. The latest trailer depicts Melissa McCarthy’s character Susan out in the field going toe-to-toe with some of the film’s antagonists, showing a little different side of her than what we’ve seen in Bridesmaids and The Heat. But is that enough to differentiate her from the other roles we’ve seen her in?

I’m not even cautiously optimistic at this point. From what we’ve seen in every trailer for Spy, the supporting cast is my biggest draw toward the film, but Melissa McCarthy I’m not too sure on. The story is so so in my mind at this moment. It’s different I’ll give it that, but its main draw is a fish out of water story.

I enjoyed Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids as a supporting character and I didn’t care much for her role in The Heat. She’s proven to have decent dramatic chops in the sub par St. Vincent, but going back to her comedy roots, I rather disliked Tammy and Identity Thief. What turns me off about Spy is that they continue to make her the bumbling goof falling over cars and unable to ride a scooter, while falling over. It’s unappealing and feeds into my doubts.

Does the world need another Melissa McCarthy movie? Are audiences ready for the actress to portray a wannabe spy?

(Click on the thumbnails below to begin the screenshot gallery)

Here’s the plot synopsis for Spy courtesy of 20th Century Fox:

Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent a global disaster.

Directed by Paul Feig, Spy stars Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, and Jude Law. This movie will hit theaters on June 5, 2015.

Final ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Trailer Leaves Nothing to Chance [191 Screenshots]

If you’re like me, you’ve been blown away by each and every trailer Warner Bros. has delivered for Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s been 30 years since Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and with this final marketing push, the distributor is leaving nothing to chance with less than two months to go. The previous trailers have done a glorious job emphasizing the action and insane visuals to come, and this one takes it even further, perhaps giving away too much.

I normally put the trailer first after the jump, but I just want to issue another warning before you attempt to watch this trailer as it presents a lot of actions scenes that I would consider spoiler territory. It doesn’t verbally give away plot details, but it does confirm what the trailers have teased thus far. And also, we’re all pretty smart people, and if you don’t want to know how certain action set pieces end, then I would definitely not watch this trailer and come back later.

Anyways, if you decided to watch this trailer, it feels like there is almost too much shown, but with less energy? It could be, although as great as it is, the music, which doesn’t feel as exciting here as in the last trailer. If I had to put my finger on it, I think it’s because the context in which the action is presented is all over the place and doesn’t quite give off the same kinetic feeling as the other trailers.

But the biggest offense the trailer commits is the fact that it unloads everything out into the open. It’s like they don’t trust that they’ve already sold us on an incredible product and want to get through to the stragglers who aren’t quite convinced. If for some reason anyone isn’t convinced they should see Fury Road after the first trailer they should reassess their taste in film.

(Click on any thumbnail below to enlarge the photo gallery)

Here is the official plot synopsis for Mad Max: Fury Road, courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone.  Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa.  They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

Written and directed by George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Zoe Kravitz, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Kennedy Miller Mitchell. This movie will arrive in theaters on May 15, 2015.

Second ‘Insidious: Chapter 3’ Trailer Brings Out the Dead [96 Screenshots]

Insidious Chapter 3 Screenshot Lin Shaye Elise Rainier 6

Tapping the well once more, Blumhouse is laying it all out on the table in this latest trailer hoping for the next installment of the Insidious franchise to succeed. Set before the first film, Insidious: Chapter 3 plans to explore the “origins” of our favorite spirit hunters and their first case together. For the spoiler sensitive out there be warned, this new trailer features a lot of money shots and story elements that you might want to savor for your theater outing. Check it out after the jump at your own risk. Continue reading
