Superman Returns has been a harsh reality for many DC fanyboys/girls to stomach over the years. Their beloved Superman was reduced to a mere shell of a character far removed from his true potential. With the announcement of Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder (300; Watchmen) at the helm, and the great Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight; Inception) producing, would this be the moment that would redeem the Big Blue Boy Scout? ‘This Is The End’ Movie Review: Big on Laughs, Short on Plot
As far as comedies go, 2013 has been slacking. A few laughs and a couple of giggles, but nothing has truly stuck out enough to break my funny bone. That is until I saw This Is The End. The epic, star-studded comedy brings the Apatow bunch to a whole new level; thanks in-part to co-writers and directorial debut of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. As the world comes to its ultimate demise, This Is The End makes good on delivering one of the raunchiest, most entertaining movies of the year. No topic is taboo and no one is safe. Continue reading
‘The Purge’ Movie Review: Terribly Frustrating and a big Disappointment
Horror has always been the go-to genre that, at its best, can pervert social commentary at lengths that leave you terrified and your mental state vulnerable. Sadly, The Purge dares to dream big, but comes out small when the filmmakers take on the 1%-ers and America’s economy through the lens of a home invasion thriller. But as high concept as The Purge may seem, the message here fails to scratch the surface level of the issues at hand. Continue reading
‘The Internship’ Movie Review: Late to the Party but Completely Harmless
Buckle up, because if The Internship is what you seek, prepare for an overly long, two-hour advertisement for Google riddled with outdated cliches. But despite the lack of ingenuity, this film turns out a pretty harmless attempt at humor with a little dash of heart. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson put in a great effort, but the once famed Wedding Crashers duo are hardly given enough room to grow. Continue reading
‘Fast & Furious 6’ Movie Review: Fuels the Franchise to New Heights
Not many movie franchises can say they have made it to a sixth entry with box office figures they can be proud of. Fast & Furious 6 is a testament to what dedication can bring to a project when all of the people involved are truly passionate of the work. With plenty of gas still left in the tank, Fast & Furious 6 proves that it can run with the big boys while also setting the bar higher for other franchises to step up their A game. Continue reading
‘Epic’ Movie Review: A Falsely Titled Animated Feature
When you entitle your film Epic, be prepared to suffer the ultimate consequences if what is shown on screen does not live up to the expectations of the name. In choosing to rename the film from its original source material, a book written by William Joyce, “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs,” the movie set itself up for disappointment before it had a chance to blossom. And although Epic is not a complete waste of time or energy, it is far from what the movie’s title implies. As the first animated picture of the summer, Epic can be commended for its effort to entertain, but fails in creating an emotionally compelling story on an epic scale. Continue reading
‘The Hangover Part III’ Movie Review: Not the Trilogy we Asked for, but the Ending we Deserve
If the movie trailers and the posters live up to their promise, this is the end for The Wolfpack as we know it. Director Todd Phillips has proclaimed The Hangover Part III as the epic finale of one of the most polarizing franchises of all time. Not disliking Part II myself, as much as everyone else, I still held reservations against Part III. Going in with low expectations, I can say that The Hangover Part III makes up for the disastrous Part II, but comes nowhere near the level of the original. Continue reading
‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Movie Review: A Grand Adventure that Lacks Ingenuity
There has been much anticipation surrounding J.J. Abrams’ follow-up sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, and the mystery box has finally been opened. Star Trek Into Darkness delivers on many of the same levels its predecessor reboot had done upon its release, and it also fails in similar fashion as well. Basically, what I’m saying here is that this new Star Trek universe lacks balls, but is highly enjoyable to watch. Continue reading
‘The Great Gatsby’ Movie Review: Style Over Substance Only Goes So Far
Overcoming a delayed release, no matter the reason, is never an easy task for a film to overcome. Any way you look at it, many films that end up being pushed back to a later date never fair too well, but Baz Luhrmann does an OK job at disproving this trend. The Great Gatsby is not a perfect adaptation by far, but there are plenty of elements in this film that avoid making it a complete disaster. Continue reading
‘Iron Man 3’ Movie Review: Creates a Better Hero, but Forgets About the Villains
Exactly one year after Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, audiences every where have been anxiously awaiting Marvel Studios‘ Iron Man 3. You would think with how successful The Avengers has become, Iron Man 3 should have no problem coasting toward success. Financially, Iron Man 3 should do gangbusters – it already has overseas – but since Marvel has opened Pandora’s box to a greater cinematic universe, the true victory will rely on whether this film can hold up on its own without the crutch of the other Avengers. Continue reading
