Movies on Blu-ray

The Forest Blu-ray Box Cover ArtThe Forest (Jason Zada) Rated PG-13 [1h 33min] – A woman goes into Japan’s Suicide Forest to find her twin sister, and confronts supernatural terror. Starring Natalie Dormer, Eoin Macken, and Stephanie Vogt

At this moment, the horror genre is in a place of transition, and it’s not in a good position for fans. The ’80s were great for slashers, the ’90s for shlocky camp, and ’00s for reboots and torture porn, but the ’10s are lacking in awkward limbo state. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some refreshing hits like V/H/S, The Cabin in the Woods, It Follows, and The Witch, but they are few and far between. The Forest is stuck in the aughts, with predictable scares and little tension. Natalie Dormer gives it her all, she’s wonderful, but the plot is paper thin and the terror of what should be a horrifying environment isn’t there. Utilizing such a historic location like the Aokigahara Forest (the Suicide Forest) as the backdrop for the film, The Forest doesn’t weave the infamous locale to work in favor of any of the themes or story. It only serves as a place of destination that invites the opportunity of ghosts. Listening to the filmmakers and cast discuss their intrigue in the special features is far more gratifying than most of the movie itself.

Special features include:

  • Exploring The Forest: Cast and filmmakers discuss their initial attraction to the project and the history behind the Aokigahara Forest; and dive into the characterizations, the visual effects, and the lore of the infamous Yurei in this behind-the-scenes featurette.

  • Feature Commentary with Director Jason Zada

Justice League vs Teen tITANS Blu-ray Box Cover ArtJustice League vs. Teen Titans (Sam Liu) Rated PG-13 [Run Time N/A] – Robin is sent to work with the Teen Titans after his volatile behavior botches up a Justice League mission. The Titans must then step up to face Trigon after he possesses the League and threatens to conquer the world. Starring Jon Bernthal, Rosario Dawson, Jake T. Austin

I’m all in favor of the tone and animation style DC Entertainment has laid out for their animated features, but I haven’t been the biggest fan of their Batman stories. And having unleashed the entire toy box of characters from both Justice League and Teen Titans, you’d think it would be a dizzying time. Being familiar with most of the characters sans Blue Beetle I didn’t have too much of a handicap going in. And surprisingly the story is pretty decent. All of the characters had a place they fit into and JLvsTT didn’t feel overstuffed. It would be hard to go in blind, not knowing the context or relationships of the heroes. JLvsTT does an OK job at setting up the Titans, but the movie still hinges on the fact that you are mostly aware of who these heroes are. These animated films are for fans, plain and simple. JLvsTT is a pretty solid action/adventure film for fans aside for one looney tunes DDR montage that overstays its bizarre welcome. For those who want more context and want to dive deeper into the history of these characters, the extras are quite rich in the lore of the DC heroes; plus you get some bonus story content in the form of two cartoon episodes.

Special features include:

  • An exclusive sneak peek at the next DC Universe Original Movie.
  • Featurette – “Growing Up Titan” – The Teen Titans have fascinated readers for over 50 years due in part to their stories of valor, as well as earning empathy with comic book readers during their own trials growing up into adulthood. This documentary spotlights the importance of young voices in the DC Comics mythology, giving generations of readers a team of heroes that mirror their own life experiences.
  • Featurette – “Heroes and Villains – Raven” – She is the daughter of one of DC Comics’ greatest villains, the demon Trigon. Raven is a powerful telepath who uses her soul-self as a means for astral projection. She is integral to the Teen Titans. This documentary is her story.
  • Featurette – “Heroes and Villains – Trigon – The most fearsome and evil opponent the Teen Titans have encountered is this inter-dimensional demon. Trigon uses his immortality to shape worlds and exact his control. This documentary introduces the character and how he raises the stakes for the Teen Titans.
  • From the DC Comics Vault – Two Classic Episodes of DC Comics cartoons

DVD Only

Flight 7500 DVD Box Cover ArtFlight 7500 (Takashi Shimizu) Rated PG-13 [1h 37min] – Flight 7500 departs Los Angeles International Airport bound for Tokyo. As the overnight flight makes its way over the Pacific Ocean during its ten-hour course, the passengers encounter what appears to be a supernatural force in the cabin. Starring Leslie Bibb, Ryan Kwanten, Amy Smart, Jamie Chung, Scout Taylor-Compton, and Nicky Whelan

I’ve been waiting for 7500 for quite some time. It’s been on horror fans radars since back in 2012 and has now just received the VOD direct-to-DVD treatment. And after watching this film I don’t blame them. The plot is wildly tempting, but the execution is poor. None of the characters are particularly likeable and the whole movie feels as stale as the air you find in an airplane cabin. For such a short run time, Flight 7500 is a slog. There are not enough unpredictable scares to make up for the snail of a pace and low tension. And the end twist is hardly rewarding enough to make up for the time spent to justify its existence.

Special features include:

  • “Inside Flight 7500” Featurette

Also Available to Own

The Coolest Comic-Con 2015 Booths, Exhibits, and Experiences

So here we are again. San Diego Comic-Con. The place that makes geek wet dreams come true. I definitely was excited to get my nerd on this weekend, and I’m always looking forward to seeing what new booths, exhibits, and experiences SDCC has to offer. Suffice it to say, I was a tad underwhelmed by most of what I saw inside and out of the San Diego Convention Center.

This is my fourth year attending Comic-Con. Every year I’m always expecting something different, looking to see new things, but as far as booths go, Comic-Con 2015 seemed a bit lackluster. Most of the major booths and exhibits such as Lionsgate, Warner Bros., DC Comics, Fox, Weta Workshop, Gentle Giant, Image Comics, Marvel, Nintendo, and X-Box among others were pretty much the same as the last few years. And even exhibitors like PlayStation were completely absent. Ubisoft and a few others cut back on the scale of their booths. Even Marvel downsized from a big video screen on their booth to just a giant scrawl to promote Ant-Man.

Last year, DC Comics gave a preview of the cape and cowl that Ben Affleck’s Batman will be wearing in Batman v Superman. This year they went one level up by showcasing the costumes of

However, there were some Comic-Con 2015 booths that did impress me. It wasn’t the movie studios who were going all out, but it was TV series who were making their mark on the show floor, and even outside. As per usual, The Walking Dead booth dominated the floor with a fun experience with multiple photo ops with the undead to tease the upcoming season – they also spoiled some major plot points from the last season. MTV’s Scream and History’s Vikings had fun booth experiences to get splattered by blood and walk away with some swag.

The most comprehensive Comic-Con 2015 booths weren’t inside however, they were outside the convention center. MTV’s Scream Queens had a carnival giant drop ride and FX hosted huge experiences such as an America Horror Story: Hotel recreation and a giant Fargo snow globe. Even Adult Swim had its own area for fans to play around in with a little carnival setting for folks to play games and win prizes.

Nerd HQ changed venues this year and instead of taking over PETCO Park they inhabited three levels of the New Children’s Museum. It was closer to the convention center and had more room for activities.

These are a few stray observations I noticed that I thought I would share. Many folks are not able to make it to Comic-Con and I hope this photo gallery will at least give you a solid taste of what it is like to walk around the epic convention.

Enter Supergirl! Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El but didn’t arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin. Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant, Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head, Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world. Her foes include both a sinister extraterrestrial menace and the high-tech terrestrial threat of clever villains with powerful weaponry. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell. Winners are posted at the Blood Drive sign-up booth at 6:30 PM each day (4:00 PM on Sunday) in the Sails Pavilion.

NBC Reveals First ‘Heroes Reborn’ Trailer and Premiere Date

NBC has unleashed the first Heroes Reborn trailer while also unveiling its premiere date. Starting Thursday, September 24, 2015, Heroes will return to NBC after five years for a 13-episode event series. While some old faces return, such as Hiro, Matt Parkman, and HRG, there will be many new characters with abilities I hope will be more exciting than someone’s tattoo displaying future events.

The first Heroes Reborn trailer is a nice set up for what’s to come, teasing just enough to bring back some interest in a show that was cancelled without a proper send off. (Those last two seasons were pretty horrendous. They were like Dexter final season quality  bad.) The footage bears some resemblance to the series’ first season, setting up an inspirational message of hope and advocating positive change through hidden potential.

Although the trailer itself doesn’t offer any kind of context about what we can expect plot-wise, NBC was kind enough to give us the official synopsis for Heroes Reborn:

A year ago, a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas, left the city decimated. Blamed for the tragic event, those with extraordinary abilities are in hiding or on the run from those with nefarious motives.

Two such vigilantes include Luke (Zachary Levi, “Chuck”) and Joanne (Judith Shekoni, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”), who are seeking to avenge a tragic loss.

Noah Bennet, aka H.R.G. (Jack Coleman, “Heroes”), has gone off the grid but conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski, “A to Z”) finds him and opens his eyes to the truth behind the Odessa tragedy.

While in hiding, some are discovering their newfound skills. Awkward teen Tommy (Robbie Kay, “Once Upon a Time”) just wants to be normal and win the girl of his dreams, Emily (Gatlin Green, “Criminal Minds”), but normalcy is virtually impossible after learning of a new ability that terrifies him. Coming from a very sheltered upbringing, a bold and ethereal teenager, Malina (Danika Yarosh, “Shameless”), has been told she is destined for greatness. In Tokyo, a quiet and unique young woman, Miko (Kiki Sukezane, “Death Yankee 3”), is trying to track down her missing father while hiding an extraordinary secret that will make her a force to be reckoned with. Elsewhere, a different type of hero is emerging through former soldier Carlos (Ryan Guzman, “The Boy Next Door”).

Meanwhile, Erica (Rya Kihlstedt, “Masters of Sex”), the head of the highly successful tech conglomerate Renautas, has an agenda of her own.

For better or for worse, some are fated to cross paths with assorted heroes of the past, including Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) and the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis), among others. Yet, together, their ultimate destiny is nothing less than saving the world and mankind.

Vague in terms of what abilities we can expect from this new crop of powered people, but at least we now have some sense of what’s at stake. My guess is that the vigilantes have been framed by the tech conglomerate and it’s up to Hiro and HRG to figure out how to sort out this mess.

Executive produced by Tim Kring, Peter Elkoff and James Middleton, Heroes Reborn will bring back original cast members Jack Coleman, Greg Grunberg, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Jimmy Jean-Louis, and Masi Oka. They’ll be joined by a few new faces, including Zachary Levi (of NBC’s “Chuck” and the Marvel franchise “Thor”), Ryan Guzman (“The Boy Next Door”), Robbie Kay (“Once Upon a Time”), Danika Yarosh (“Shameless”), Judith Shekoni (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2″), Kiki Sukezane (“Death Yankee 3″), Henry Zebrowski (NBC’s “A to Z”) and Gatlin Green (“Criminal Minds”). The new 13-episode “event” series is set to premiere this fall on NBC at 8 p.m., Thursday, September 24, 2015.

NBC Offers a First Look at ‘Heroes Reborn’ and the Return of HRG

NBC Offers a First Look at 'Heroes Reborn' and the Return of HRG

When I first learned that NBC would be reviving their superhero series Heroes, which that had a strong start and the limpest of exits, I let out a snortle and went back to business as usual. But a lot has changed in the realm of superheroes in pop culture since 2010 when Heroes debuted its final episode without receiving a proper final series. There now have been two Avengers movies from Marvel and DC is setting up a Justice League movie. Since NBC Universal doesn’t own the rights to any DC or Marvel characters, why not revive a property that was kinda hot back in its heyday? So here we have our first look at Heroes Reborn, a 13-episode “event series” that aims to rekindle that lost spark of what was once a promising show. Continue reading
