As the road to Oscar carries on, the competition for Best Picture is not keeping calm. At the 66th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards, the top honor went to Alfonso Cuarón, who has previous won at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes. 12 Years a Slave and Gravity have been neck and neck, vying for votes and smashing expectations everywhere. With this win, it would seem as though Cuarón has this one in the bag for Best Director, but I wouldn’t count Slave out of the running for Best Picture. Notably, the PGA Awards have been looked upon as one of the best bets to determine which film would walk away with the Oscar for Best Picture. According to IndieWire.com, the PGA winner for Best Picture has matched the Oscars 17 times over the past 24 years, the last six times in fact. But with so many incredible movies in 2013 the Producers Guild of America knocked Hollywood on its ass by giving both Gravity and 12 Years a Slave Best Picture at the awards last night.
