batman 1989 joker jack nicholson

Batman (1989) (Tim Burton) Rated PG-13 [126 min] – The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being the clownishly homicidal Joker. Starring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger

It’s a really tough call, but Tim Burton’s Batman may be better than Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, but only by a slight margin.

(Watch it now)

johnny depp chocolat

Chocolat (Lasse Hallström) Rated PG-13 [121 min] – A woman and her daughter open a chocolate shop in a small French village that shakes up the rigid morality of the community. Starring Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, and Alfred Molina

“Did you know that the best night I’ve had in the last 5 years is a night that Zooey and I split a bottle of wine, we made a summer salad and watched Chocolat together?” – Peter Klaven (I Love You, Man)

(Watch it now)

rocky sylvester stallone

Rocky I-V (John G. Avildsen/Sylvester Stallone) Rocky Balboa, a small-time boxer gets a supremely rare chance to fight the heavy-weight champion, Apollo Creed, in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.  Starring Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, and Burt Young

arnold schwarzenegger terminator 1984

The Terminator (James Cameron) Rated R [107 min] – A human-looking indestructible cyborg is sent from 2029 to 1984 to assassinate a waitress, whose unborn son will lead humanity in a war against the machines, while a soldier from that war is sent to protect her at all costs. If you’re unwilling to see Terminator: Genisys this weekend, take a look back at the great film that started it all.

(Watch it now)

dragons: race to the edge

Dragons: Race to the Edge (Season 1) (Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois) Rated TV-PG [22 min] – Unlock the secrets of the Dragon Eye and come face to face with more dragons than anyone has ever imagined as Hiccup, Toothless and the Dragon Riders soar to the edge of adventure. Starring Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, T.J. Miller, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse

I haven’t seen this series yet, but I love the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. And from what I saw at WonderCon, Race to the Edge should hold over fans quite well until the next film.

(Watch it now)

Young & Hungry (Season 2) (David Holden) Unrated [22 min] – A well-off young tech entrepreneur hires a feisty young food blogger to be his personal chef. Starring Emily Osment, Jonathan Sadowski, Aimee Carrero, Kym Whitley, Rex Lee, and Jesse McCartney

ABC Family has some oddball comedies that are lived in by very colorful characters. Young & Hungry is no exception. The series is fairly cartoonish, but it has some heart. As many will tell you, ABC Family series are a lot more risque and adult than the channel’s title will have you believe.

Netflix Streaming Report Turn The Right Corner

Box Office Battlefield: Magic Mike XXL vs. Terminator: Genisys

Every week, movie studios select candidates to enter the glorious battlefield for your hard-earned dollars. The weekend warriors of July 1, 2015 includes Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys, as well as the limited release of Amy. Box Office Battlefield is here to help you decide which movie(s) will take priority over the others and determine who will be victorious. Should you see ’em, skip ’em, or rent ’em? Find out below!

Last weekend, Jurassic World barely took the top spot with $54.5 million as Pixar’s Inside Out was close behind with $52.3 million. Ted 2 opened fairly poorly in third place with $33.5 million, considering the first opened at $54.4 million. The rated R comedy did manage to put down the inspiration dog movie, Max, which came in at fourth place with $12.1 million.

Does Jurassic World have what it takes to make stay king of the castle for a fourth weekend in a row? Or will it slip out of first thanks to the body oil exuding from the male stripper sequel? But don’t count out Skynet’s ruthless ability to stay ever vigilant in its quest for domination. My saddle’s waiting, come and jump on it! This is the Box Office Battlefield:

Magic Mike XXL Movie Title Logo

Magic Mike XXL (Gregory Jacobs) [7/1 Release] Rated R [115 min] – Three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, he and the remaining Kings of Tampa hit the road to Myrtle Beach to put on one last blow-out performance. Starring Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash, and Amber Heard [Watch the trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 62% • Audience – 75%

My review:

After being pleasantly surprised by Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, I was a little skeptical going into the sequel without the auteur director. As producer and first assistant director for Magic Mike, Gregory Jacobs at least had a hand in understanding the male stripper with a heart of gold coming into the sequel. Magic Mike XXL is far more commercial and less dark than its predecessor, but it still has a greater sense of drama than what many audiences are going in to enjoy. On the other side of the coin, the choreography is fantastic and even more stimulating to the senses with all the gyrations and thrusting. The comedy is more streamlined, but the jokes are built up well thanks to the camaraderie amongst the cast. Given that the first movie is more of a character study, Magic Mike XXL is a lot more lighthearted and fun; but not goofy-fun to the point that it’s breaking away from the original’s tone, more so that it brings additional flavor and continues to build the world around the Kings of Tampa. There is also an interesting dynamic of gender roles, feminism, empowerment, and a strong theme of taking pride in your sexuality, which comes across very sincere. MATINEE IT!

terminator-genisys-movie-title-logo

Terminator Genisys (Alan Taylor) [7/1 Release] Rated PG-13 [125 min] – John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarah Connor, but when he arrives in 1984, nothing is as he expected it to be. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, and J.K. Simmons [Watch the trailer]

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 26% • Audience – 70%

My review:

I’m going to be on the opposite side of the fence on this one in which I decree Terminator: Genisys is not as terrible as the majority would have you believe. What really makes this decent film in my book is the characterization of Reese (Courtney), Sarah Connor (Clarke), and the Guardian T-800 (Schrawzenegger). I liked the dynamic chemistry they had going on. The action is fairly good too. However, there is a lot of exposition spewed out on multiple occasions where you have to keep your wits about you. Granted, there are a fair amount of plot holes and story elements that don’t add up, but they the filmmakers have the best intentions and nothing feels absolutely forced. For some reason I had fun watching Genisys as a popcorn blockbuster. It’s not overly convoluted, and the cast makes it worthwhile. RENT IT!

Amy Documentary 2015 Movie Title Logo

Amy (Asif Kapadia) [Limited – 7/3] Rated R [128 min] – The story of Amy Winehouse in her own words, featuring unseen archival footage and unheard tracks. Starring Amy Winehouse, Mitch Winehouse, Mark Ronson, and Russell Brand

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics – 97% • Audience – XX%

Their reviews:

“A shattering documentary about a silenced voice.” – Devin Faraci (Birth.Movies.Death)

“Amy is a celebration of its subject’s talent… But it’s also a terribly sad portrait of an addict surrounded by enablers and opportunists.” – Alison Willmore (BuzzFeed)

My take:

I’d pick a fantastical world over the real world any day, but apparently this documentary about the late Amy Winehouse has critics in an almost unanimous praise. It seems like it would be an interesting watch for anyone who likes these kinds of flicks. It’s just not for me. MATINEE IT!

Both Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys are not huge spectacle films, but they have their nuances. The Terminator franchise has run fairly dry with the last two sequels not stacking up to their superior predecessors. But maybe Game of Thrones fans will be interested to see Khaleesi outside of the land of dragons and into a different role. Genisys is also rated PG-13. Magic Mike was such a surprise hit back in 2012 that there’s not denying the anticipation of its latest sequel. However, it is a film that will draw in a very niche audience, regardless of the shenanigans to be had seen throughout. XXL is rated R though and even limits its audience even further. The top previously releases such as Inside Out and Jurassic World are still going strong and may even upset the new contenders. With limited options for children, Pixar has a great opportunity this holiday weekend to capitalize. So as it stands, I believe the victor for this weekend will be:

Winner: Magic Mike XXL

New on shelves this week are Get Hard, While We’re Young, The Gunman, and more.

get hard movie will ferrell kevin hart

Movies on Blu-ray

Get Hard (Etan Cohen) Rated R [100 min] – When millionaire James King is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars. Starring Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart, Alison Brie, and T.I.

I expected the worst, but walked away mildly enjoying the antics between Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. There are good intentions, but it’s hard not to look past its racist tendencies. The duo work well together, but for 100 min, Get Hard feels a lot longer than the substance the film provides. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Unrated Cut of the Film
  • Just Put Your Lips Together and Blow
  • Get Hard Line-O-Ramas
  • The Kevin Hart Workout
  • Face Off with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart
  • Ferrell Fighting

  • Twerking 101
  • Will Ferrell, Gangsta
  • Inmates: Out of Control
  • Bikers, Babes and Big Bangs
  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted Scenes

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (David Zellner) Unrated [105 min] – A jaded Japanese woman discovers a hidden copy of Fargo (1996) on VHS, believing it to be a treasure map indicating the location of a large case of money. Starring Rinko Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Katsube, Shirley Venard, and David Zellner

When I saw the film in theaters I had a hard time concentrating on the film because a bunch of old people wouldn’t shut their yaps throughout. From what I could keep my attention on, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is a very sweet and hilariously dark comedy filled with existentialism. Kikuchi’s performance is captivating and poignant, while the rest of the cast demonstrate a perfect balance. Team Bunzo! RENT IT!

  • Audio commentary with the Zellner Brothers and producer Chris Ohlson
  • Deleted and alternate scenes

While We’re Young (Noah Baumbach) Rated R [97 min] – A middle-aged couple’s career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives. Starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, and Amanda Seyfried

If you’re like me and despise hipster culture, While We’re Young may be difficult to stomach. But all the while the movie allows for a handful of good laughs at their expense. Baumbach attempts for a real calculating story that delivers a punch in the face the viewer and the characters may not see coming. Look at all of his work, I may have enjoyed While We’re Young the most, but still not my kind of film. It may float your boat though. RENT IT!

Special features include:

  • Six Behind-the-Scenes Vignettes:
    • “The Cast”
    • “Working with Filmmaker Noah Baumbach”
    • “Generation Tech”
    • “Working with Charles Grodin”
    • “Ayahuasca Ceremony”
    • “Hip-Hop Class”

Last Knights (Kazuaki Kiriya) Rated R [115 min] – A fallen warrior rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge his dishonored master. Starring Clive Owen, Morgan Freeman, and Aksel Hennie

For what it’s worth, Last Knight could have been a lot worse. Overly convoluted and plagued with uninteresting characters, Kazuaki Kiriya presents a very bland piece of cinema. Sadly not even the cast can keep the ship afloat. Morgan Freeman’s strange beard thing may be the most interesting thing about the whole movie. SKIP IT!

Special features include:

  •  “Behind the Scenes of Last Knights” featurette
  • “A Look at the Special Effects of Last Knights” featurette
  • Cast and Crew Interviews

The Gunman (Pierre Morel) Rated R [115 min] – A sniper on a mercenary assassination team, kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier’s successful kill shot forces him into hiding. Returning to the Congo years later, he becomes the target of a hit squad himself. Starring Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Jasmine Trinca, and Javier Bardem

I did not get the chance to see this film in theaters or via a screener. I have not heard any good things about the film either.
